Hello everyone :), what I would like to introduce today is Object 787.
The BMPT fire support vehicle has received continuous attention in recent years, and it has always been a hot topic for both gamers and military enthusiasts. Before it, several prototype cars were manufactured and tested, and their final research results have led to the current development of BMPT. And the Object 787 introduced in this article is one of them.
In the 1980s, the Soviet Union summarized its experience after some wars and believed that infantry needed a tank that could provide strong firepower support and had certain protective and mobile capabilities, so that it could attack multiple targets and provide fire cover for infantry while flexibly moving. However, due to the dissolution of the Soviet Union, these projects were forced to be suspended and research came to a halt.
Later, due to the Chechen War, practical experience once again proved that this type of vehicle was necessary. In 1995, Chelyabinsk Tractor Factory decided to initiate relevant research and began manufacturing at its own expense without a research order from the Ministry of Defense. This type of vehicle is positioned to meet most combat needs and has the strongest possible firepower.
The design objective of this project is to be a multi-purpose vehicle capable of supporting infantry and armored vehicles, operating in different terrains, and effectively attacking various enemy targets. Due to the large inventory of T-72 tanks in the Russian Federation at this time, the new vehicle was chosen as the chassis for the T-72AV tank. In order to simplify production and research, the chassis was not heavily modified, and the original transmission and engine were retained. The entire vehicle was equipped with Contact-1 explosive reactive armor.
The project was called Object 787, later given the additional name “Viper”. The weapons were installed on both sides of the turret, with the main weapons being 2A72 automatic guns and 7.62 machine guns. In addition, 12 S-8 rockets were installed on the outside of the automatic guns. Each weapon has a pitch mechanism and can be linked to adjust pitch. Smoke grenade launchers are installed below the weapons to respond to emergency situations. In order to use weapons for aiming, the turret is equipped with photoelectric systems and other optical instruments, and the original turret’s commander observation tower is retained.
Quickly, the prototype Viper was manufactured and began testing in 1996. It was handed over to the military department for performance testing in 1997 The conclusion drawn afterwards is that Object 787 has excellent performance and received good reviews The shooting test also showed that it is an effective weapon and has gained the support of many senior military officers. Afterwards, the factory promoted Viper and posted a large number of advertisements on television, which was considered illegal. Therefore, the project was forced to be closed and the prototype car was sealed. The prototype car was stored until 2017, and after nearly 20 years of wind and rain, it was repaired and stored in the Kubinka Tank Museum.
The Object 787 is a powerful tank with two machine guns that can effectively destroy light armored targets and is also very powerful when attacking the side of main battle tanks The rockets on both sides of the turret can assist in the attack. In terms of protection, the entire vehicle is equipped with explosive reactive armor, which can effectively resist attacks. This is a very distinctive tank, with a recommended BR of 9.7.
