Hello everyone :), what I would like to introduce today is Object 781.
The Soviet Union learned many lessons from the Afghanistan War. They found that BMP-2, ZSU-23-4, and ZSU-57-2 were very effective in level fire attacks, and enemy forces hiding in buildings could not withstand such powerful firepower. But these self-propelled anti-aircraft guns have too weak protection and are very easy to be destroyed. So this gave rise to a demand for armored units: they must have both sufficient firepower and appropriate defense, and be able to accompany armored units to deal with most combat scenarios and provide firepower support. This type of vehicle was later called BMPT.
Due to the high demand for this type of vehicle by the military, it was quickly included in the “Five Year Plan for the Development and Research of the Most Important Weapons and Equipment from 1986 to 1990”, becoming a mandatory requirement of national organizations and receiving financial support for research and development. The Chelyabinsk Tractor Factory took on this task and began retrofitting the existing T-72 chassis. The first prototype was quickly manufactured and named “Object 781”. In order to enable this tank to attack multiple targets simultaneously, the design bureau designed it with 7 member positions. Except for the driver, 6 weapon position members can independently control the weapon and are equipped with modern observation and aiming devices In order to facilitate attacks under poor lighting and adverse weather conditions at night, searchlights are also installed.
Two prototype cars were manufactured with the same chassis, the first one was called Object 781 A, while the other was called Object 781 B or Object 782. Its chassis is the same as Object 781 A, with only differences in weapon systems. In 1987, two prototype vehicles were tested and transported to Arabino near Moscow to showcase to the highest leadership of the Soviet military These two cars immediately attracted strong interest from Soviet officials upon testing. After returning from Arabino, these vehicles were sent to the training ground in Priachino, Chebarkur District, Chelyabinsk Oblast for testing Despite its promising future, by 1990, all work had come to a halt and materials and drawings had been transferred, leading to the dissolution of the Soviet Union. Without the support of the country, the project was quickly and completely terminated. Two prototype vehicles that have already been manufactured are stored in the Tank Museum in Kubinka.
Unlike the BMP series, Object 781 is equipped with two independent 2A72 30mm automatic gun turrets. Each turret is operated by a separate gunner, and a twin mounted 9M113 anti tank missile launcher is installed on one turret, while the other is equipped with a searchlight and smoke grenade launcher. In order to attack infantry, there is an independent 7.62mm remote-controlled machine gun on the rear of the tank, and two AGS-40 automatic grenade launchers on both sides of the tank, allowing it to simultaneously attack six different targets.
Object 781 is a distinctive Soviet tank. It has powerful machine guns to attack light armored units, as well as the ability to launch missiles to attack tanks, and provides sufficient protection to withstand normal weapon fire Two turrets also enhance his firepower, allowing him to immediately engage in combat even if one is damaged. Seven members and a variety of weapons allow it to retain some combat power even when hit Suggested BR is 9.3.
