Description: The OARE Jeep was an Italian-modified version of the famous American Jeep Willy’s off-road. During and after the Second World War, the American army gave Italy a lot of different vehicles to rebuild the Italian army, but many of them were in a decadent and ruined state and could not be properly used. So the Italian army asked the Officina Automobilistica Riparazioni Esercito (O.A.R.E.), a garage in the city of Bologna, to modify and repair the various vehicles that the American forces left or gave to the Italian army. Amongst those vehicles, there were a lot of Jeep Willy’s, a very common American off-road used a lot during the Italian campaign for transport porpouses. It was asked to OARE to modify those Jeep’s with different car doors, dashboards, armor, and many others. Not all the Jeeps given to Italy were upgraded, and the number of OARE Jeeps is unknown. In the Italian army service, it was mainly used for transport and medical transport. It was tested in two different weapons systems: the M40A1 106 mm recoiless rifle and a roket launcher unit. In the late 1950s, they were replaced by the Fiat Campagnola and the Alfa Romeo 1900M. Many units, after being decommissioned, were bought by civilians and privates. Many of them reconverted the OARE Jeep to their previous Willy’s standard because they preferred the original model.
