It’s unsurprising that Sweden got its f16, which won’t solve anything, at a point that it is no longer relevant to the current meta. Still, at least it give us an interesting Penguin carrier that has a targeting pod… right?
Well, turns out, you cannot get a lock on any ground target with the penguin, even within the supposed 2.5km lock range. Even if you launch the penguin targeting just two meters next to a tank, it still hits the ground. Now I get that the missile is a anti-ship missile that tracks larger targets, but a tank with its engine on should be a hot enough target for the penguin to at least deviate a bit from the ground it is ‘tracking’.
This is my first problem with this aircraft. The fact that IRIS-T and other armaments that make this aircraft unique is not in the game means that the Penguin is a huge part of what make this f16 a less copy-paste aircraft. But with the current Penguin, you can’t really use it apart from against ship in AirSim maybe.
What do you guys think? Should the Penguin having at least some ability to track ground units?
Also, how accurate is this aircraft depicted? What is the game version lacking?
Because its anti ship missile it can lock only targets bigger then 10m
Okay, that make some sense. Do you know any source proving the minimum size of lockable target by the Penguin?
Once IRIS-T comes into game, it will be both with other next gen IRs and it will come to every aircraft that can carry it, making it not unique.
So why even mention it this way lol.
It’s suppose to be the only few(if not the only) f16s that does use IRIS-T. Just in case you didn’t get what I implied: the uniqueness is in comparison to other f16s.
Fair enough.
You were able to lock ground targets with the penguins in game for a while with the F5, I think they broke it at some point
Most specifics fall under current government secrecy, as these missiles are still in service with several air- and naval forces and it has seen combat several times this year alone.
All public pamphlets and notes on it feature at most small ships as the smallest targets under 1000m.
for the mk.3 used on the F-16:
Both are public broshures that you can find with a simple google search. Any specifics on the seeker head that go into great detail are either gathered by going to the manufacturers themselves or having acces to classifed documents.
Depends they could give it the laser anti ground IRIS-T missile Norway made lol.
That’s what I thought. The f5 was able to lock on ground target when it came out. I’m just surprised that it now couldn’t.
They changed it because the Japanese ship missile couldn’t do it iirc, you can see them complaining about it on the forum for the F-5A(G)-40 but they ended up removing iff the oenguin and letting the Japanese ship missiles target tanks.
The Japanese ASM-2 can lock ground targets in-game, but cannot track them properly. It’s also almost impossible to hit tanks with it because of the sea skimming behaviour.
When you power the Penguin up for the first time you can actually point launch it, but it won’t lock anything, so that’s not very useful either.
It’s a bit sad that this is how Gaijin models these kinds of weapons, but I guess it’s more realistic.
I kinda miss being able to launch Kormorans at tanks and planes lol
every F-16 can use IRIS-T because IRIS-T is fired from AiM-9L launchers without any Modification
no aircraft can differentiate between an IRIS-T and AiM-9L/M
the point launch is useful against stationary targets like SAMs as long as they don’t shoot it down ofc
the main advantage is that you can have them on the Inner wing pylons too where you can’t have Mavericks
Norway never made any laser IRIS-T, it was just a regular IRIS-T used against a ground target.

thats funny to know
wonder if they’ll add that to the game
wait wait wait wait wait does that mean the IRIS-T SLS/SLM missiles should also be able to hit ground targets?
In theory I suppose it’s possible, the seeker probably has to be able to see the target though which is something of a problem for the current vehicles.
