Description: The SH90 is the Italian anty ship/anty submarine version of the Joint projected NH90 helicopter. It’s development started back in 1985, when 5 nations, Italy, France, Germany, Netherlands and the UK started a collaborative project in order to develop a new anty ship and anty submarine helicopter in order to replace older platforms, like the Italian AB212 ASW, the German, British and French Lynx etc. But only two years after the start of the project took place, the United Kingdom decided to leave the project since it didn’t fit anymore of its requirements. The contract for the final development and final design phase was signed on 1 September 1992 with NAHEMA (NATO Helicopter Management Agency), representing Italy, France, Germany, and the Netherlands, with the works starting in 1993. It was decided that the helicopter would have been developed in two versions, a transport one named TTH (Tactical Transport Helicopter) and an anty asw/as named Nato Frigate Helicopter (NFH), with a total of 75% of commanality between the two two versions. Two years later, the first prototype, P1, made it’s first flight, followed by P2 in 1997 and P3 in 1998. Three years later, Portougal decided to join the program as the fifth partner nation (but they left in 2011 due to financial problems without a single helicopter being made for them). In 2000, the Italian Armed Forces requested a total of 116 helicopters, 60 TTH for the Army and 46 NFH + 10 TTH for the Navy. The first TTH was delivered in 2007, while the first NFH was in 2011. In the Italian Navy service, the NFH was named SH90, and like the others, the NFH was modified from the base version in order to fit Italian an requirements. Compared to the others, the SH90 is equipped with the OTS-90 sonic system, Helras sonar, and last but not least, a pair of General Electric T700-GE-T6E1 turboshaft engines. These engines don’t only make the helicopter faster (315 km/h compared to 300 km/h), but they are also the reason why the Italian NH90 fleets are not suffering any availability issues. The last SH90 was delivered earlier this year (2024), and the Italian Navy also signed alongside Germany, The Netherlands, and Belgium an upgrade program, which will consist of an upgraded datalink, a new IFF, a new optic, new sonar, and new weapons.
Why it should be in game: Since this is a naval helicopter, what I’m suggesting is not to implement this helicopter or anything similar now, but only when gaijin will decided to add naval helicopter to naval battles. Being basically one of the latest Italian naval helicopter, the SH90 could be a very good addition under the right circumstances thanks to it’s powerfoul weapons and sistems.
