The system itself is modular and can be tailored to fit reconnaissance, EW, and precision strike. Specifically, it can be equipped with a tandem-HEAT warhead to destroy heavy army targets at ranges in the tens of miles.
M2 is the IFV variant with less tow tube racks & more seats
M3 is essentially the recon variant with more tows & less seats
There’s some minor variance in later versions optics wise, but otherwise they’re identical
As Quartas said, it’s still around, its mostly just as case of the M2 & M3 being scoped down in roles by Stryker and the launch of the XM30 programme to replace both (the M2 & M3) by 2030ish. So we’re only seeing smaller upgrades & capability sustainment programmes rather than a larger upgrade programme.
Talking XM30, I really don’t get the whole idea of going for a non-bradley chassis? IIRC the AMPV, a Bradley based system, has only recently gone into full rate production, loosing that parts commonality seems a bit wasteful IMO
It will be armed with a new 30mm autocannon with airburst munitions developed by Leonardo, Spike LR2. ATGM’s, extended hull, Janus-D sighting system, new engine, and more.
It’s a modular missile that can be taken apart for reassignment of missions. The missions entail: reconnaissance, surveillance, and target acquisition; electronic warfare, precision strike, and
communications. The drone/missile can also be retasked midflight or if it misses its target, come back and strike it once more.
F-4G wouldn’t fit well in the game unless dedicated SEAD became a reality in game (introduction of ARM’s like Shrikes, HARMs, Standards etc), which would be cool. I’m all for more Phantoms in the US tree though, suggestions for F-4B, F-4D, F-4N, F-4E (1983 spec) promise some cool variation in the Phantom family.
In addition, we should definitely have the F-101A and F-106A (1972 spec) in game. Although the AIM-4 missiles wouldn’t suite the meta, both aircraft are capable of gunfighting, and a total lack of Falcon missiles in game is missing out on important early piece of missile tech history IMO, even if its bad in game. Also A-4M still not in the US tree even though Israel had the A-4N for years now… would be nice to have that and the A-4K (from New Zealand) in the UK tree
East German ZiL-131 towing a 57mm S60 AA trailer. It could theoretically be fired while on the move (though it would be very hard to aim). They could even add a system that lets you stop and set the gun in a firing position (can’t move while it’s set, 5-10 seconds to set/lift leveling jacks for more accurate fire). I just like the idea of speeding around in a cargo truck while the gunners hold on for dear life.
