It would make more sense in terms of not putting all their eggs in one basket as well, potentially stretching Boeing’s commitments too thin and making USA liable to any potential downfalls from only having one supplier.

Yeah but super hornet 2 sound wrong. I mean the super hornet itself is already like the hornet II.
Also it would cause confusion since Super Hornet and Super Hornet 2 would be in service at the same time

Harrier II was an evolution of the og Harrier rather than a whole new plane the makers wanted to promote as a “spiritual successor”.
The original Harriers were still in service when the Harrier II arrived, weren’t they?
