Perhaps at 9.3 br, but at 11.3 they are almost entirely unremarkable. It’s basically the same as a Leopard 1A5 for goodness sake. Everyone and their dog has 12x zoom by about 10.3. only the 2.6x is remarkable but it’s of questionable utility in many cases.
Such an extreme difference in minimal and maximal magnification is a nuissance to me who uses mousewheel to set range instead of zoom.
To be a pedant, yes I am also referring to thermal OPTICS.
I find them most useful in commanders sight if it has a wide field of view, since the higher position allows low-risk observation. Gunners thermals of 2nd gen or higher become basically mandatory on the longer range or cluttered maps at 11.0+ BR.
They’re a lifesaver against vehicles without thermals, not on all maps though.
Mostly because there just aren’t any, I can barely recall many 11.3 MBT off the top of my head that aren’t T-72B3 and so on.
I don’t agree because;
3BM60 is on the lower end of usable, it’s genuinely one of the worst rounds at 11.7 often paired with unfavourable reload speeds, 6.5 seconds seems nice but since loads of reloads are between 4-6 seconds (RIP 7.1 autoloaders) it’s not exactly stellar.
I just checked further details about what the Т-80У-Е1 (Объект 219АС-1) is and it seems it’s just a BV hull with K5 added (Essentially the same as late T-80U) and with a T-80UD turret, so some minor electronics changes that mean basically nothing, some different model of thermals (not sure if gen2) and capacity to shoot 3BM46 (owing to UD turret) I’m not sure it even fits 3BM60.
So at best it’s a T-80U with maybe gen2 thermals, 3BM60 and a different missile which basically nobody uses and at worst it’s virtually identical to T-80U.
