(-) No tracking radar, only optical tracking (struggles to lock if the sky isn’t clear)
(-) No smoke grenades, only ESS (which Kh-38MTs, Hammers, and Mavericks can see through)
(-) Missiles are worse at anti-air
FlaRakRad:
(+) Has a tracking radar (can track/lock through clouds)
(+) Has smoke grenades
(+) Missiles are better at anti-air
(-) No guns
(-) Only 2 missiles at the ready
(-) Missiles are very bad against tanks (we arent counting the odd overpressure clip)
Both
(+) Thermal sights
(-) Massive vehicles (FlaRakRad has it worse)
(-) No armor at all
(-) Easy to ammorack
The issue comes down to why new SPAA are being added. Yes the ADATS is capable of killing tanks, but it is worse at doing the role it’s needed for – killing aircraft.
The FlaRakRad is definitely better for killing aircraft, while the ADATS has alternatives that are better than it for killing tanks (ie. MBTs, LTs, etc.), although nothing really beats it in multirole flexibility.
I fully understand that the ADATS allows for much more flexibility than the FlaRakRad. I’m not discounting that. It’s just that it’s very fair to say the ADATS is lacking in the SPAA and defensive capabilities department due to its lack of tracking radar and its lack of smoke grenades respectively.
Either way, all nations severely need new SPAA. I fully expect SLAMRAAMs to come soon. If it isn’t this patch, it’ll probably be one of the Fall patches.
The Patriot is coming this year according to the leak, so while America is far from great at AA now, they will likely be one of the best within six months.
I’m not very confident that Patriots will be playable, but then again I don’t know the extent to which Gaijin plans on allowing players to control in a match. I hope we end up getting some GRB reworks in light of the new SPAA.
When technical limitations were mentioned, it reminded me to ask…
Are there any plans to implement dual-plane (bank-to-turn) guidance for missiles in sooner or later?
Missiles like the AIM-54 and Aspide used dual-plane guidance in real life, but are currently modeled with single-plane guidance in the game. As a result, their performance is not accurately represented. These missiles were added years ago, but there has been no visible progress on this issue.
BUK is actually weaker than Pantsir. Pantsir for the game mode and map sizes we have is the best SHORAD system in the world. Russia would be better with the Pantsir S2
BUK will struggle to shoot down ordinance but will have a longer range in game than the current Pantsir S1
Tho the patriots are also used by Germany, Japan, ex-Israel, Sweden as well. Personally i believe they will be playable gaijin themselves said “heavier” SAM systems in the works.
but just like S-300 and Patriot it’s a stationary Multi vehicle system, and the ones we’ve seen so far and leaked so far are at least a bit more compact stationary systems
BUK is an older system designed to shoot down aircraft. While it has been modernised with the BUK M3
It’s Radar is not as advanced as Pantsir and it can only have 4 missiles ready to launch
BUK is a medium range system up to 70km but in the closer range 15km engagements we have in game Pantsir is superior
