Next Major Update - Rumor Round-Up & Discussion (Part 1)

The AAM-5 and 5B lack datalink, as per its exclusion in the technical document CPS-U138002-3. The idea of it having datalink was something that basically just materialized on wikipedia with no proper sources, then was spread around.

While not confirmed with anything official afaik, there are reports of P5 getting DL.

In game it lacks it, so unless someone bug reports it with some source.

odd I thought it did, CAMM has DL which is just a surfaced launched ASRAAM

The brochure for CAMM and other MBDA missiles with datalink states datalink in the brochure but the ASRAAM brochure lacks the term datalink in there.

I looked around and it seems that people infer the 360 degree LOAL capability as requiring datalink when that isn’t the case.

oh btw, it seems that according to this the Python 3/PL-8 should have a 60 degree gimbal limit instead of 40 degrees that it has in-game.

Yes, i do know it is Janes, but its worth investigating.

wonder if Block 6 has DL since its meant to be used on the F-35 with LOAL, the brochure is also only for the early ASRAAMs I think

How I understood it is that the datalink is between fighter aircraft, and now Python 5 can receive targeting data from a different aircraft within the tactical network than the launcher, not that the Python 5 itself received datalink.

cant LOAL be done without datalink?

If you look at the fading part, you can see that they say that there is no need to install a new transceiver on the aircraft, as the same radio that provides data to the plane provide it to the missile.

It seems to be a broad network connecting ground and air vehicles, as well as missiles, so in theory a ground radar could guide a P5

yes

Nah, its a specific upgrade for CAMM.

Its a shame. Blk6 might, but its not been stated anywhere.

It says here that as a consequence of this upgrade, fighter jets within the tactical network can provide uplink to the missile. Nothing about guiding. And what you stated just is more evidence that it’s talking about fighter to fighter datalink since an additional antenna isn’t required to be installed on the fighter aircraft.

Yes, firstly by just dumb self search modes, which I believe some missiles in game should already have?

(Warthunder lacks any proper self search modes, which is annoying cause some missiles should make good use of self search modes even while on the rail).

But basically yeah, as long as you have inertial guidance you can have LOAL. Stuff like the AAM-5 still have 360 degree threat scopes, just by the missile launching then guiding towards where the HMD is pointing, with a self search mode then activating. Although this would kinda not be great in WT cause again, WT lacks proper search mode modeling for munitions.

Uplink to missile. Uplink is a differnt way to say datalink.
To be precise, one way DL transmitting to.

Well how else would they word it that the Python 5 is capable of receiving initial targeting information from other fighter jets within the network?

This part only

Adding the part about Uplink to the missile

As well as adding it provides Uplink to other missiles
Makes it seem to me that it is talking about to missile DL.

Do y’all even believe that LOAL would be added?
