well phantoms were used more as bombers anyway, the few engagements against mig17s that they have, they pretty much always won unless they had no missiles left, where they would just return to base and continue…

Buddy calm down with your france, yeah they have some good jets but calm yourself already, Rafale is 15 years more advanced than anything that china and russia feature, doesnt mean now France will be able to to invade and take over the USA

Never said they can, just saying that the individual jets are on-par

they arent on par, france has 2-3 rafale and now you assume that VIVA LA FRANCEE

I quote: " The McDonnell Douglas F-4 Phantom II is a … jet interceptor and fighter bomber" and

Spoiler

“The USAF and the US Navy had high expectations of the F-4 Phantom, assuming that the massive firepower, the best available on-board radar, the highest speed and acceleration properties, coupled with new tactics, would provide Phantoms with an advantage over the MiGs. However, in confrontations with the lighter MiG-21, F-4s did not always succeed and began to suffer losses.”

The early missiles weren’t wonder weapons you make them to be…
Pretty sure USAF realized that back then and started putting gunpods on early Phantoms and eventually ended up taking F-4E with built in gun

Again you’re missing the point. The technology used in the jet is on-par with what America’s fielding. Not a total-military power thing, the INDIVIDUAL technologies.

It’s quite unsual to see such old fashioned kind of prejudice, like someone from 20 years ago.
I’d suggest just ignore him

i clearly stated how they were the first generation of missiles, any tech can have problems and actually now is even more common because they are so complex

What you’re trying to do is take the actual best jet of the era and just smear it with the 2-3 times that it wasnt completely dominant

Aim-9B was nearly one, when it first entered service, but yeah. Vietnam was a massive wake up call for the USAF that a fighter without a gun was a bad idea.

@ExecutivOutcomes

not even close, way closer than china’s and russia’s for sure

Please keep it respectful and tidy in here. Some of the last few comments are completely unnecessary.

Just entered this. And refuse to get dragged into this but. On a 1 to 1 level. Most European nations field equipment on par or superior to the US.

The difference is the US invests most of its GDP into it’s military where most European nations funnel it into things like health care, education, etc.

So where a European nation fields 200 fighters. The US fields a 1000.

We know for a fact that something like a type 45 destroyer fielded by the RN outperforms pretty much anything in the US navy and is considered the best air defence ship in the world but Britain only has 6 of them, which is their main Achilles heel…
