I agree with you generally on this.
If the Gripen year started with us being told about what’s stopping the Q&A from being the same. We might just have a worst-case scenario on our hands.

The F-20 basically wasn’t allowed to by the State Department, as it had to be intermediate (better than F-5E, worse than F-16A) for the original FX program in the late 70s.
By 1984, when Taiwan was blacklisted from buying it, as well as Reagan relaxing export restrictions, the F-20 was kind of allowed to be made better, especially seeing as the F-20 now had to compete with the F-16C (and its APG-68) on the export market.
There was a 4th prototype under construction which supposedly had a bigger wing, more fuel tanks, more powerful engine, single 30mm cannon replacing twin 20mms, more powerful radar, and electromagnetic maneuvering flaps, but it was never completed before cancellation of the program.
