New Run of Nuclear Escalation!

I’ll check that good idea

I have a few more critiques for this mode after playing a good bit more yesterday.

The 30km TGP limit HAS to go. 30km of distance is not enough for engaging long range SAMs like the S300. I have died a time or two to the S300s trying to engage them because their missiles are so incredibly fast that when you pop up to put targeting points on their radars, it gives you very little room for error. It is also unrealistic. Targeting pods like the Sniper ATP were designed to acquire targets at extremely long ranges of 50+ miles.

You need to fix IR and TV guided munitions. Right now they are extremely unreliable at hitting convoy targets. No matter what angle I launch from, they always land 20ft behind the target. The only targets I can reliably engage are the 2s6s because they slow to a crawl to attempt an intercept and the Kamaz trucks because they (usually) just get overpressured anyways by the near miss. Laser guided munitions seem to be mostly unaffected.

You need to fix NATO side ESM. On planes like the F16 with the AN/ASQ-213 HTS, it does not have to “scan” for radar emissions like a radar scans for targets. When a radar source pings it, it immediately detects it exactly how the russian ESM functions in game, and how it functioned in the dev server. A lot of NATO planes are also completely missing their ESM.

IR weapons that also have GPS guidance (like the GBU-53) should be able to be salvo’d to targeting points, just with their IR seeker disabled, so they would function like a regular GPS bomb. Or maybe let them use their IR seeker for terminal guidance, that could be cool as well.

The rewards for taking out the long range SAMs need to be significantly increased. I usually spend the first 20 minutes of the round taking out the S300s on one side of the map so I have free airspace, and I’ll come out with about 10 or so ground targets and just barely be breaking even on SL spawn costs.

Trying to spot targets through the targeting pod is pretty annoying at times, due to all the trees that get in the way. I know you said there are more maps coming eventually. I really hope one of those is a desert map so we don’t have to deal with all the trees.

Please give NATO some ARMs for the lower bracket. I want some Shrikes and maybe some STARMs for my phantom. Maybe add a wild weasel phantom as well?

I know I’m probably forgetting something so I’ll come back to edit this later if I remember something

When did they confirm the AGM-45? I know its been in the files for years, but during the heavy cavalry dev server when I asked Smin when it might come, I was just told “Not in this update currently. Subject to change. But perhaps something for the future.”

GBU-53/Spice250 behave just like average GPS guided bomb when using Aiming Point, that includes launches without seeker LoS ie you’re flying away from the target and ask glide bomb to do 180 turn.

Do they retain GPS guidance until final descent where IR takes over, being immune to clouds I don’t know yet.

What I meant is those bombs and munitions should be functional with the new multi point targeting mechanic for gps weapons, where you can place multiple target points and then press the salvo drop keybind and all your gps weapons will split themselves between the targeting points. Right now if you have those target points set and press the salvo drop button, nothing happens.

The TV seeker issue is more due to the game never wanting to render all the foliage that would disrupt the lock… as well as half the time, convoys are moving along routes that disrupt the lock enough for it to fail.

I completely agree with the 30km range.

And a ‘Wild Wiesel’ could be actually super fun if a unique variant exist as a event.
Edit : There is.

But when you keep pressing “fire secondary weapon”, they correctly drop one by one and fly to their targets. Only thing not working is firing multiple GBUs 53 to single aiming point ie saturating single AA.

So if I have 4 target points set on 4 S300 radars, they will go 2 each to all 4 S300 radars? I didn’t realize it could do that. Either way they still need to make it work with the salvo button so I can drop them all immediately instead of sitting there spamming the spacebar for 10 seconds while an S300 missile is screaming towards me.

I’m trying that again in test flight, but thats the gist of it. However, one of the bombs will fly off into the sunset, as if its locked into the sky, so its still not perfect.

I think I see the pattern. If you select two or more GBUs onto single aiming point, first one released will “clear” binding, and next one will fly into the sunset.

And by observing their “FoV” through follow missile/bomb keybind, they seem to fly via IOG/GPS until they enter dive, then IR seeker takes over, as FoV suddenly snaps to where was the target.

Spices 1000 and 2000 don’t work with Aiming Points, at all. Having one bound to Aiming Point prevents them from activating seeker, until you clear that bind you have bomb shaped deadweights on your airframe.

I doubt IRL laser rangefinders can go much further, long range bombing is usually done on predetermined coordinates specified by military intelligence not by using gps weapons target of opportunity mode

This definitely is not the issue because I constantly have GBU-53s and Mavericks miss on direct top down drops and high altitude drops with clear line of sight, yet I can have the same munitions hit a crawling 2s6 through basically an entire forest with no issue, so long as they don’t direct hit a tree. The way I have been trying to drop with slightly better (but still abysmal) success is to come in from behind the convoy along the road so that my munitions have clear line of sight through the roadway to the back of the vehicles, yet they still miss 90% of the time. There is definitely some kind of desync going on, because in GRB they are not this unrelaible at hitting moving targets (even ones moving faster than the convoys), and they have no problem with hitting moving targets with similar amounts of tree cover. Also, when I use any laser guided weapons with the same launch parameters, they hit just fine.

What the hell did they do to matchmaking? Yesterday I was using the F-16CM and I always got 13.0 - 14.0 matches. It was fun and balanced. Now I’m getting uptiered to 14.7 literally every game and I absolutely refuse to play single match at 14.7 again. Every other jet has AESA radar that can see literally the whole map and they have much more and better missiles meanwhile my best radar mode is a freaking HMD and I have 2 (two!) AIM-120!. Lock the matchmaking, because 13.7 simply has no chance against 14.7 bs jets

Nothing. You were simply lucky with your matchmaking gambling.

Tornado GR4 effectively able to take out all long range radars without being in any danger at all chefs kiss

The ALARM cannot be killed by any of the long range AA if its travelling faster than 1500km/h

  1. Spawn at rear base, climb to >9000 meters, and pop off your 9x ALARMS at the HAWK, ESM and PATRIOT radars.

  2. Repeat 2 or 3 times, or have friends do the same

  3. Enjoy total air superiority and immunity to all AA above 5000m, and farm enemies with bombs and brimstones.

Slap on a 500% booster and earn 500k to 1m per game for extra $$$

Real quick I kinda want to touch upon my own thoughts regarding Nuclear weapons in Nuclear thunder.

While I know the gamemode is literally called Nuclear thunder, I do think it would benefit from not having nukes in the long run (a name change isnt a big deal). Given that currently the gameplay loop is: (1) Get enough kills to spawn in a nuke (2) Nuke rush an airfield or cluster of enemies (3) repeat.

While there are other things to do such as SEAD or Naval, by and large this is the most effective, and from my experience, most used method in the mode. While yes, i know nuke big boom, very cool and satisfying but this loop is a bit monotonous, and is basically being used as better SEAD than other dedicated weapon systems. (I mean the reason we have these weapons is because irl we dont just drop a nuke on anything) Also, having nukes be the main gimmick of the mode bars its use for era’s where nukes didn’t exist (WW2), and makes adding strategic bombers slightly useless. (Why would you bring a giant target of a plane with regular bombs if you have a fast, agile and small plane with a bigger bomb, a nuke, anyway) Obviously more advanced bombers have access to stand-off munitions but I think its important to look at earlier era’s (1990s and below) as this shouldn’t be a mode just for top tier.

That said, I don’t think removing nukes is something that has to be done for the mode to have more longevity… maybe some other ways they could be implemented? So far I’ve thought of these two ways to this could be handled:
(I’m not saying these are the things that should happen and am interested in hearing other ways you think this could be done)

  1. Remove Nuclear weapons.
This would mean that strategic or other large payload carrying planes would be responsible for the destruction of the airfields, which would encourage team play, i.e. defend the bomber. As well as make bombers have a more logical role in the event, especially in the lower BR bracket/Earlier Era’s.
Not to mention this would make SEAD weaponry and such much more important. While I understand that currently nukes are by far the easiest way to get rid of a pesky SPAA/SAM site, this will become easier when we get more A2G and SEAD weapons and the mode is further balanced.

  2. Make nuclear weapons available only to specific planes.
I think the current nuclear capable planes, while cool don’t actually give any new or interesting gameplay other than that its a nuke, you fly low and fast, drop the bomb, then RTB. I think limiting nuclear weapons to strategic bombers only would, at least in theory, give you more reason to actually use HARMS ect for SEAD rather than just sending in a nuclear fighter. I think giving the option for players to equip a nuke on their own bombers (i.e Researched from the tech tree) would also be a good idea as otherwise each nation would be beholden to Gaijin’s choice of nuclear bomber per nation. This would also make it a bit more diverse as you could have multiple nuclear capable bombers per nation and let the player decide which ones they would prefer using (Obviously this would only be the this gamemode and not for any others).

Once again, completely open to discussion and I’m interested in your opinions or idea’s.

Agreed

Was this also doable when the UK was still on the bluefor side as well?

Can someone tell me how to high fly without being touched by S300 pls
