Want to try out the KH25ML etc missiles on the su25, but im having trouble understanding whats going on when im testing them in test flights.
First problem I have is whenever I hit “fire secondary weapon/fire a2g missile” keybind I get the redsquare which locks my laser on that point and I can’t maneuver the missile until hitting my keybind to remove target point which is annoying and not gonna be great when every split second matters in these situations. Although I assume having whatever setting this is on is beneficial for other weapons, is there a toggle? And what even is the setting?
Second problem I have is I can’t seem to fire the missiles unless I’m looking at the ground, which is kinda terrible if I’m behind a hill/tree lines and want to loft the missile up and over, then guide it in after I come over the top. Not sure if this is related to the first problem?
3rd problem is when trying to aim the laser designator in 3rd person view its like I have arthiritis, the seeker jumps all over hell, tried turning down sensitivity to 15% in free camera which helped, but its still pretty awful, is there a way to smooth this out? Any less sens and it becomes awful to use look around for things other than guiding these.
4th problem I have is if i break the laser designator mid flight, the missile doesn’t go to where it was last pointing and just starts to nose dive, is that intended behavior or something I can stop? For instance say I launch on a stationary tank 5km away, and halfway through I turn off the designator or go outside the target lock due to say having to avoid SPAA, and the missile instead of going for the tank it was last trained on, just goes into the ground well before reaching the tank.
Ideally I’d like the controls to go something like…
- Hit fire secondary weapon key, immedietely fire the missile without having to press it again, and be able to do this while looking above the horizon in some cases.
- Guide the missile to target with free cam, and then use target point to lock it on when I feel like its on target and no more adjustment is needed
- pull out of the attack run before it even lands, and have it still go for that last lazed posistion via target lock
is this possible?
I think it’d be quite useful to set a keybind to activate target point. And yes, the missiles seem to have the same procedure as IR missiles, they first have to acquire something (in this case they need to see the laser point) and then you can launch them. In this case, air isn’t enough to reflect a laser beam so the missiles don’t see it. You’ll have to look at the ground.
Do you know what the setting is that automatically sets a target point when you hit fire weapons key? I can’t seem to find it, might be called something weird. Also I feel like that setting is extremely useful for more advanced weapons that use like IR/TV seekers or have automatic tracking and having to turn that on/off all the time is going to be annoying, is there a toggle switch keybind for this setting?
I think it’s made on purpose because if you didn’t activate target point you’d need to be facing the vehicle till the missiles hit. With the target point, you’re able to fly a bit more freely. Whereas the missiles losing lock it’s because they don’t have Inertial Guidance or GNSS, so they basically self-destruct.
Seems like the auto target point/lock is being controlled by 2 settings
“Enable laser designator before launch”
and
“Auto enabling of aim lock after shooting”
Turning just 1 of these off will still set a target point, if they are both turned off I can fire a KH25 without having it locked in place, not sure whats going on here. Ideally I want to just fire, get it on target manually then hit target point/lock.
Right now I press fire, it sets a target point, then I have to press fire a second time since it wont fire without a target point with these settings on, then turn off target point so I can manually guide the missile, then hit target point again to lock it on target.
I wish I could just fire the missile without a target point, then hit target point to keep it where I want it. That’s 2 buttons vs 4.
Edit: Ok I can do that with these 2 settings turned off, and it seems like it works fine and doesn’t mess with any other aircraft firing FNF missiles (I think).
So there is no way to loft these missiles because it wont fire unless the laser has a reflection? And I have to laze the target the entire way, otherwise the missile will nose dive?
As I stated before it’s not possible as it works the same way a IR Air to air missile, the missile first has to acquire and then when it locks, you can launch.
If there’s ground yes, air seems to not work.
Correct. It works similarly to other vehicles. Also, if you were to be able to launch it, you’d have to make sure that the missile received the reflection of the laser when you changed to the ground.
