Naval Projectile Fragmentation Damage: What’s New?

Thank you! I will try. USS Nevada doesn’t seem to have any visible gaps on the armor viewer, but the ease it has to blow up to low caliber HE is astonishing.

Maybe and hopefully this is a specific damage model as you said, and not a whole mechanic issue!

…and done! I hope it helps clear the issue out.

Damage seems WAY overtuned. I enjoyed the longer battles in naval, and now it’s playing like Call of Duty. Armor seems completely ineffective and high rate of fire trumps every other factor in determining if a ship is good or fun to play.

This has caused a marked decrease in naval enjoyment for me. I would much rather see the old damage model than this “first person to hit wins” mode.

I understand, for instance, that people didn’t like dealing with the Scharnhorst which was very difficult to kill, but making it one of the easiest ships to kill while it performs poorly in the damage category is not what I think most people had in mind.

Currently, there is no reason to take a battleship into a match as it will be mercilessly jolly stomped by a 5.3 cruiser or a 4.7 destroyer while firing every 40ish seconds.

Per the post and also comments, any changes in “armour effectiveness” are likely armour gap bugs, and should be reported.

Won’t this make the RU ships, especially coastal, even more potent? Once sighted, I average 3-6 seconds before I’m nerfed by an RU coastal at the same rank. My WW2 DDs can’t compete for caps against ships that appear 14 years later with all the advantages in speed and accuracy. My same rank wooden coastal boats last 1-2 seconds.

I get that, but as they stated when this first started most ships have these gaps, and they are going to have to fix them individually. At the current rate, that should take about 20 years.

Instead of having to test each ship by firing at every spot in order to create a bug report, I’d rather they revert the changes, do the testing we pay them to do, fix the gaps, and THEN implement the new damage model.

Call me crazy, but introducing massive changes with little testing, doesn’t seem like the way to go.

Hmm, given everything, I feel “testing” through the live server is actually far more practical. The sheer volume difference in sample sizes and different scenarios between a few people on a dev server or internal testers, compared to the wider player base is massive. Trying to use only the former might actually take twenty years lol.

I don’t want to beta test changes. The current state of naval damage is broken. I don’t think it makes you any less of a loyal player to admit that.

It really depends what it is. The armour pen / water bug that was fixed here was severe and universal, and definitely should have been caught before going live. But little things not easily found like individual ship armour gaps aren’t something were it makes sense to hold back an entire system rework over.

Nice too see Naval HE shells getting reworked, but the question I have is when can we see this rework implemented for Aircraft cannons?
Most, if not all aircraft cannons are still missing a huge amount of their fragments especially stuff like 20mm’ s which can produce a total amount as low as 5 fragments.

Positive changes for naval but please rework Aircraft cannon fragmentation as you have done here.

Coastal needs a separate gamemode from regular naval with its own BRs, similar to what they’re intending to do with strike aircraft in air vs ground RB. Tiny wooden torpedo boats with twin 40s shouldn’t ever have to face stuff like the SKRs, Köln, and the other 76mm slingers, much less Syonan and similar ships…

…And Syonan/Hoqiuam shouldn’t face or be higher than reserve-tier destroyers that outstrip them in every category.

Can we get the naval devs to work on the ground mode penetration system? Ground AP is a disaster.

Yeah, with every gamemode I play, I see how uptiering/downtiering is destroying the experience…

In naval, there is too far of a technology gap to even have a flawed BR system that is being used as of now.

Same with Air realistic battles. The jump from 9.0-10 or 10.0-11.0 is too great and it doesn’t make any sense.

Hope they will do something about the flawed BR system or perhaps decompress the entire tech tree in all aspects.

Really appreciate the post, its always interesting to read stuff like this.

I am glad that Naval is being worked on!

Is similar fragmentation rework going to be done in Air or Ground as well, or was this just the weakness of the Naval?

not to forget PR206 - this boat shreds nearly all other boats within seconds. It seems now a little bit easier to kill but therefore the damage given to larger ships by PR206 has also inceased. In ground mode every (non-russian ;-) ) tank which performs quite good (EBR!) is increased in BR due to the “statistics”. The respective charts of the russian op-boats must be extraordinary! I often play coastal 3.3 or 3.7 - often the 4.3 in the enemy team is a PR206 where our 4.3 is a destroyer causing the 206 player to obtain more kills as all other players in sum. And when the opposite happens most of your targets were “stolen” by the 206… The german 4.3 boats like Hugin or Pfeil can’t really compete vs PR206

Is this a joke? Are you playing your own game? Battleships are getting constantly 1 shot, it’s completely unplayable and unrealistic. How did you, with all this effort into modelling shells and modules, manage to make this less realistic that WoWS??

I want to congratulate the developers.
Back in the days I loved to play naval RB. I have all ships in the USA, Japan, GB and Germany tech tree. All bluewater ship and allmost all coastal ships. All hidroplanes. All what you need to win the mach.
Now I only play when a new ship arrives and play until I research it.
I don’t even buy it. Scharnhorst, Hood, Fuso and Cleveland or Alaska and that’s it.
I don’t even create line ups anymore. I don’t bother.
2 minuts in game, die, and start new one. Until research is done. Like Mutsu now.
You’ve turned a great game into a horrible time-wasting experience without any fun what so ever.
Congratulations again on your effort to destroy good gameplay and I wish you all the best

Sadly the fix you did for diving shells seems to have backfired. They are back to normal again where they just ignore water and pen the ships less armoured areas below the waterline

Its just a fancy dev blog full of blah, but it actually means nothing.

Please Gaijin, i beg of you. UNDO THIS CHANGE.

All this has done is return us to HE spam meta. Destroyers can 2 shot heavy cruisers. Ships like Helena and Atlanta just steam roll every single match and god forbid you have a slow fire rate. You wont be doing any damage today. Not too mention the random ammo wracks. Ships that once had armour, now have absolutely none.

Seriously, just undo this change, it didnt work, it failed, Naval is now totally unplayable
