NASAMS 3 radar was updated but lost backscan

It was 15

4s per rotation so 15rpm

ok, idk where I heard the 16 rpm from

yes on live, on dev its 30 now
but backscan is gone

Yes, and that is correct now. Rear facing beam was should not have been a thing.

idk how it should work exactly

but back-scan is mentioned plenty in documentation about the radar so that seems weird to me

Back scan is not the same as read facing beam, it was explained here.
Back scan is radar sending a beam in the direction opposite to the antenne rotation. In case of Sentinel, that will be up to 5,5° away from the antenne norm.
That feature is not in game right now.
There is no rear facing beam on a real radar, that was corrected. Why devs did it, they probably misunderstood what back-scan, but they corrected it now.

if thats true its still missing backscan, though i (and many others) had misinterperated what it meant doesnt mean its not missing

where does this limit come from? ive not seen it in any of the sources posted here

Yes, but that feature is missing globally, in all radars that have tha ability.

here you can see both usages of the back scan,
Search beam is pararell to the antenne face, while a backscan is used to verify target, so it allows the radar to confirm a target in one rotation, and to track already known target.

would be relatively simple to fix i think by making the radar scan a width instead of just 1 line that would at least for WT simulate the backscan, though imma be honest calling that backscan is a bit misleading on the name

also on a slightly different note what is that rear facing radar for if not backscan

All radars scan with width, but its not that simple with the current implementation. In case of the sentinel it is 3° wide.
In game there are 2 ways of makign groudn radars rn. One, where a big fan shaped beam of not known to me width spins around, and 2nd, where a smaller, circular beam goes up and down while scanning around the radar. Sentinel is the 2nd case.
Example of the 2nd case, so its easy to understand

That will be most likely IFF, or a ECM compensation antenne. I dont think it is specified anywhere, but it is 100% not a second radar, it would need to be the same size as the main array, in order to provide the same performance.

if it were a radar i would expect it to just scan to update the locations of the targets not locate new ones, for that you dont need an array as large

That most likely IFF tho
You can see here, that there are no rear facing beams, and that it has a dedicated L band IFF

Placement of IFF antenne on the opposite side to the array is also a common thing

Loved all the explanation in this thank you for helping me understand.

this topic is so on point, i was happen to be reseaching the nasams project, basically we have the NASAMS 3 in-game right now but not its full potential, the reason why theres a “3” after the “NASAMS” means that the platform upgraded to facilitate using more modern; ESA-AESA radar on the system, gaijin just being lazy or BIASED again…

Edit: the radar on the current version is so old and updates so slow that; firing at aircrafts that are closer than 5km is pointless, the missles can not figure out where to go and completely miss the target cause the radar cannot update the targets position fast enough… Meanwhile they say the BUK is bad and were bringing a new AA to the russian tech tree…

Edit 2: heres the first devblog on the nasams system at 10th of december 2025 published by gaijin CLEARLY STATES THAT THIS IS “NASAMS 3”…

Edit 3: (i cant have enough edits…) Just give the radar upgrade modification to it Just like 2S6 has a radar upgrade kit on its modifications… (this also supports the reality that nasams 3 has “optional” radar upgrades to the AESA)
