This vehicle was developed by the Czech company Excalibur Army in 2022 to counter Iranian-made Shaheed loitering munitions. Rather than designing an entirely new weapon system, Excalibur Army decided for a simple upgrade by mounting a ZPU-2 on top of a Toyota Land Cruiser 79 (HZJ79).
Toyota Land Cruiser 79 (HZJ79) is very popular vehicle chosen for it’s versatility and reliability in bad conditions. It’s use has been noted in history with various forces and groups using Toyota Land Cruiser series in the world. Excalibur Army has developed multiple vehicles based off of this car.
In mid-2023, a modified version equipped with a thermal sight was unveiled at IDET 2023, and it entered service in Ukraine later that year.
The vehicle entered service with the Ukrainian Army in late 2022, with more than 100 units built so far. The first 15 units were funded through a Czech public fundraising campaign. These vehicles have already shot down numerous drones and loitering munitions.
