This vehicle was developed by the Czech company Excalibur Army in 2022 to counter Iranian-made Shaheed loitering munitions. Rather than designing an entirely new weapon system, Excalibur Army decided for a simple upgrade by mounting a modified ZPU-2 on top of a Toyota Land Cruiser 79 (HZJ79).
The prototype of production series mounts unmodified ZPU-2 14,5mm anti-air cannon on top of Toyota Land Cruiser 79 (HZJ79), this vehicle is missing additional ammunition storage that is present on the production series. The gun also sits lower, missing additional platform making it smaller silhouette compared to the production series.
Toyota Land Cruiser 79 (HZJ79) is very popular vehicle chosen for it’s versatility and reliability in bad conditions. It’s use has been noted in history with various forces and groups using Toyota Land Cruiser series in the world. Excalibur Army has developed multiple vehicles based off of this car.
The production variant of this vehicle entered service in Ukraine in late 2022, with later variants equipped with thermal sight entering Ukranian service in 2023.
