Today‘s suggestion is about the Soyombo symbol whose origin is credited to Zanabazar in 1686, a highly spiritual Buddhist man, the 1st to hold the spiritual head of a Jebtsundamba Khutuktu of the Gelugs, a type of Tibetan Buddhist school in Mongolia. “Soyombo” is derived from Sanskrit svayambhu which means “self-created”.

Its first official usage saw in the 1st flag of an independent Mongolia after the fall of the Qing Dynasty in 1911 and despite various flag changes, it has always remained a key symbol in the Mongolian flags.

Now what does the Soyombo represent ?

It is composed of 10 geometrical shapes and given the following significance from top :

  • Fire is a general symbol of eternal growth, wealth, and success.
The three tongues of the flame represent the past, present, and future.
  • Sun (●) and crescent moon symbolizes the existence of the Mongolian nation.
  • The two triangles (▼) allude to the point of an arrow or spear. They point downward to announce the defeat of interior and exterior enemies.
  • The two horizontal rectangles (▬) give stability to the round shape. The rectangular shape represents the honesty and justice of the people of Mongolia, whether they stand at the top or at the bottom of society.
  • The Taijitu or better as known Yin & Yang symbol illustrates the mutual complement of opposites. During the Communist era It was interpreted as two fish, symbolizing vigilance, because fish never close their eyes. Nowadays it is understood as the duality and complementarity of man and woman.
  • The two vertical rectangles (▮) can be interpreted as the walls of a fort. They represent unity and strength, relating to a Mongolian proverb: "The friendship of two is stronger than stone walls
