Description: The MMI Lupo F564 was an Italian anti-ship frigate of the Cold War. In 1970, to respond to the increasing number of Soviet vessels operating in the Mediterranean Sea, the Italian Navy commissioned
Cantieri Navali Riuniti, an Italian shipbuilding company, to design a new anty ship frigate. These new ships would have been equipped with various different weapons, including a 127 mm cannon, 8 anty ship missiles, an anty air missile launcher, and 2 ciws. The first ship of an order of four, the Lupo, was laid down in 1974 and was delivered to the Italian Navy three years later, in 1976. Alongside her sisterships, Lupo was deployed in the Red Sea for tanker escort operations during the Iraqi-Iranian war, which lasted from 1987 to 1988. Two years later, in 1990, Lupo and her sisterships were heading once again in the Middle East region in order to join the NATO naval force that was taking part in the second Gulf War. After this conflict, the Lupo class received an upgraded radar, the SPS-702 CORA, and various satellite communication systems. But they would not have remained in service for long; indeed, nearly nine years later, the four Lupo-class frigates were decommissioned and sold to the Peruvian Navy, which still operates them today. In the barely mentioned armament department, the ship was well equipped for anti-ship warfare. The Lupo class was fitted with a single 127/54 mm OTO main cannon, with a max range of nearly 24 km with unguided shells and 100 km with Vulcano GPS-guided shells. The main anty ship armament happened to be a total of height OTOMAT MK1, a 60 km anty ship missile, armed with a powrfoul sap warhead. Later, the ship also received the upgraded version, which featured an improved range of 180 km and improved electronics. In the anty air department, the ship featured a single Albatros MK1 air-to-surface missile launcher, capable of shooting the aspide MK1 (unclear if it was ever upgraded with the aspide 2000), and a couple of Breda Dardo 40 mm ciws, which are the longest range ciws ever created. It was also equipped with a couple of triple ILAS3 324 mm torpedo launcher equipped with AS244 torpedo. The Lupo class is also equipped with a small hangar and a helipad for an AB212 ASW helicopter.
