Description: The Carlo Bergamini is an Italian stealth frigate of the FREEM class. The program started back in the early 2000’s when France and Italy signed a program to develop a new Frigate class fitted with the latest technologies with the intention of making 27 units in total (17 for France (later reduced to 8) and 10 for Italy) presented in three different configurations: Anty submarine, general porpouse, and land attack (with the latter one being cancelled shortly after the start of the program). Since the start of the project, it was pretty clear that both navies would have adopted different classes, with very big changes between French and Italian units (mainly regarding the structures, the armaments, the radars, and the electronics). The Italian Navy at the start of the project ordered a total of 10 units in the FREEM-IT configuration, with four being the anty submarine configuration and six being the general porpouse configuration. The first one, Carlo Bergamini, was started back in 2008. She was launched in 2011 and completed two years later, in 2013, which was also the year of her entry into the Italian navy. Since then, the Carlo Bergamini has taken part in various international missions and trainings all over the world. The ship itself is very well armed, featuring a single OTO 127/64 mm cannon in the front, capable of shooting Vulcano 127 ammunition in the unguided version, called BER (ballistic extended range) with a max range of 60 km, and the GLR (guided long range), a GPS-guided ammo with a total of 120 km of range. The ship is also equipped on the back with a single OTO 76/62 Davide cannon, which is an upgraded version of the normal OTO 76. It features two types of guided ammunition, with the first one being the STRALES, a medium/short range anty aircraft/anty missile IR-guided bullet with more than 10 km of range (although it is not confirmed for now). The second one is the Vulcano 76, a smaller version of the Vulcano 127, with GPS guidance and a total of 40 km of range. In the missile department, the Bergamini features a total of sixteen Sylver A50 cells for the ASTER 30 anty air missiles, and unlike its French counterparts, it’s not equipped with MDCN cruise missiles, even though the Italian Navy is interested in applying these modifications to Italian FREEM’s too. It also features a total of eight anti-ship missile launchers for the OTOMAT MK2 Block IV, a long-range missile beyond the line of sight with a range from 180 km to 250 km (not confirmed for now; various sources are contradictory). For anty piracy, the ship is equipped with two 25 mm Oerlikon cannon, while for anty submarine operations, the ship is equipped with two triple launchers for the MU90 324 mm torpedo.
