Description: The Bersagliere F584 was an Italian anty ship class of the Soldati class. In 1980, the Iraqi Navy ordered a total of Lupo-class frigates with various differences compared to the Italian units, such as additional antisubmarine equipment and a telescopic hangar. All four ships for Iraq were completed from 1985 to 1987, but the restrictions currently applied by the UN in response to the Iraqi-Iranian war had delayed the purchase by a lot, and all four ships remained docked in Italy. After the end of the war, the Iraqi president Saddam Hussein reopened negotiations once again, asking the Italian government a discuont since the ship deliveries were far away from schedule. But with the start of the Iraqi-Kuwaiti war in 1990, the sale was once again blocked, and again the ships remained towed in an Italian dock. In 1993, it was decided to sell these four vessels to the Italian Navy, who modified them, removing all the anti-submarine equipment (leaving this role to the standard Lupo and Maestrale class). In 2005, the third unit, Bersagliere, was chosen as a tesbed for the OTO new 127/64 cannon, but the most interesting part is that the ship didn’t receive a new cannon, but instead the already existing 127/54 mm was retrofitted, making the Bersagliere’s 127 a unique piece. In the Italian navy, this ship was used for escort and for anty ship duties, even though she didn’t see action in any war. She was retired in 2018, and she was scrapped shortly after… They were fitted with a single 127/64 mm OTO main cannon, with a max range of 60 km with unguided shells and 120 km with Vulcano GPS-guided shells. The main anty ship armament happened to be a total of height OTOMAT MK2 (later upgraded to the MK2 Block IV version). In the anty air department, the ship featured a single Albatros MK 2 air-to-surface missile launcher, capable of shooting the aspide 2000, and a couple of Breda Dardo 40 mm ciws, which are the longest range ciws ever created. The Soldati class is also equipped with a small hangar and a helipad for an AB212 ASW helicopter.
