Description: The Anemone was an Italian coastal minesweeper of the Fiori class, originally made for the Royal Navy. In 1941, thanks to the new land lease law emitted by the US government to help the Allied efforts in the second world war, the US navy was able to order a total of 80 minesweepers of the new BYMS class, later raised to 250. But with the entry of the United States of America into the conflict, a bigger number of ships of every type was requested, and so the additional 170 units for the Royal Navy were anded over the US one. Still, a total of 53 ships of these 170 were delivered to the Royal Navy. Funnily enough, some British and American units ended up having the same serial number, so the Royal Navy decided to change the serial number of every vessel, adding 2000 to the already existing number. At the end of the war, of the 150 units delivered to the Royal Navy, only 18 were still operative, with the other vessels being scrapped or donated to other navies, like the Hellenic, Finnish, Italian, and Dutch ones. The first BYMS, the BYMS 2009, was delivered to the Italian Navy in 1947, where it received the new name of Anemone, with the remaining 16 units delivered shortly after. The BYMS class in Italian service was renamed Fiori class, and each ship received the name of a flower (like Orchidea, Tulipano, Biancospino, and others). Being a minesweeper, Anemone and its class had a small amount of weapons, including 1x 76/50 mm main gun, 2x 20 mm oerlikon anty aircraft cannons and various depth charges launchers. In Italian service, the Anemone and its class were used for their intended purpose, but they didn’t see any actions, and they were struck from Italian registers in 1966. Their final fate is not very well known, but very likely they were scrapped for materials.
