Mitsubishi Ki-46-IVb
History:
Four prototypes of the Ki-46-IV were developed between 1943 and 1944, retaining the Ki-46-III’s airframe but upgraded with Ha-112-II Ru engines. These engines included exhaust-driven turbosuperchargers, allowing for impressive high-altitude capabilities with a 1,100 hp rating at altitudes of up to 10,200 meters (33,465 feet). Unlike its predecessor, the Ki-46-IV incorporated key enhancements, such as positioning turbosuperchargers in the lower rear of the engine nacelles. Due to space constraints, the design did not accommodate an intercooler, so methanol cooling was applied to the intake air. Fuel capacity was also boosted to 1,977 liters (435 Imperial gallons).
Testing began in early 1944, but delays arose due to issues with the turbosupercharger system. This ultimately postponed the planned production of the Ki-46-IVa reconnaissance variant and the Ki-46-IVb fighter model, which featured nose-mounted cannons. Consequently, these models were removed from high production priorities. However, the Ki-46-II and III versions remained active throughout the war. In a February 1945 demonstration, two Ki-46-IV aircraft showed their advanced capabilities by covering 2,301 km (1,430 miles) at an average speed of 700 km/h (435 mph), assisted by favorable tailwinds, confirming the Dinah’s status as a premier reconnaissance aircraft of its time.
