Sad it was never finished but it’s enough to add under Gaijin’s rules. Though it would be a stand alone aircraft so you won’t get anything after it. It’s nice we won’t just have an import for the top tier of Japan

This could be at the end of the domestic fighter (F-1/F-2) line, with F-35 in the import fighter (F-4/F-15) line.
I could see GCAP eventually coming after it, but it will be years before that even exists, while 5th gen is probably less than a year away.

I dont think 5th gen is going to be what people think it will be cracked up to be. But Mitsubushi 26DMU will be effective enough.

Mmm, you know, im considering changing the name of the thread / suggestion. Cause while the model used as a reference for this is the 26DMU, thats not really the project name. And imo it being named after the actual project would put the suggestion in better faith for a lot of people, rather than naming it after a design configuration mockup of the project.
So, what do we think its name should be?
- Mitsubishi 26DMU
- i³ Prototype
- F-X Preliminary Prototype
- F-X 26DMU Study

Honestly I feel like there isn’t an ideal solution at all.
Just going for 26DMU is a bit weird because the entire DMU series was only design mockups for the F-X aircraft that’s suggested.
That is just about the equivalent of making a KF-21 suggestion named C-109. It’s technically the right design, but not really the name of the final aircraft.

But it also can’t be named (X)F-3 because that would overlap with the future GCAP, and just “F-X” is too vague because it’s used for other projects as well, again including GCAP.
I usually call it “5th gen F-X” to avoid the confusion with 6th gen F-X / GCAP, but that just doesn’t sound good for a name in game.
So I think something like “F-X (26DMU)” would be the best compromise. It’s the F-X fighter based on the 26DMU design.

With the sub tree with the likely of Indonesia getting the KAI KF-21 to keep Japan unique adding in the F-3 is a must to be special.
to bad they never cooked up a theoretical load out for the X-2 as its a test bed unless there is something deep in the Japanese military concerning it.
Technically there is one, but it was only a wind tunnel test. This leaves no space for the weapons bay to actually be there or weapons to be properly integrated.
The X-2 was really more of a general testbed for the 5th gen project than a prototype for an armed plane itself
if we can find one bent chunk of metal destined for this plane there can be a post. I would have believed they would have gone like the Korean plane and copy its philosophy of low visibility and dump and run with the missiles. Cheap and easy no door.
dumb question did they ever do any mock battles with the X-2? No weapons needed.
But thanks the strange stealth fighter version might be interesting as a award in a event suggestion I’m cooking up.
The X-2 will never be a suitable suggestion, we already have to deny posts asking for it more often than we’d like.

This plane was never meant to exist, it was just to test the aerodynamics on a weapons bay in general, never an intended design for the X-2.
If you want “armed X-2”, this suggestion is basically the closest to that, because it’s the combat aircraft project the X-2 was built for.

Damn you guys must have a drinking game. I did a deep dive a long time ago not even a tire and I guess you ran into even deeper dives.
It could have quite a few interesting camos when it comes to the game.

Sometimes an alternate version of the standard blue camo is shown that is greyed out. This could be a good alternate camo and would be more similar to what is commonly found on other aircraft as well.

This camo is most commonly seen on more simple renders, often when showing internal components of the basic shape. While I don’t think this is necessarily an intended pattern for the aircraft, it is still relatively similar to what would be seen on other 5th gen fighters like the F-35 or J-35, so it could be something Gaijin could take as inspiration.

Its still a cool plane even though it cant do anything. Would look great on the F-3 as a unlockable skin.
Coming back to this suggestion I wonder how realistic gaijin would consider it? Especially with Thailand, Indonesia and Malaysia being all confirmed sub trees. Indonesia in particular giving way for potential 4.5+ gen fighters and maybe KAAN if they go for it. Isn’t there also rumors of Malaysia eyeing up the SU-57?
I would still love to see DMU26 being realized

True but if you think about it Kf-21 and KAAN would be pretty unique KF-21 would be a unique jet closer to Rafale and Typhoon (agile, fast, some stealth and good selection of missiles and advance radar and avionics) and kaan would be a unique 5th gen if Indonesia buys them. So the verdict for DMU26 in gaijins eyes is less likely I would think.
