Mirage 2000 Thread : Variants, performance, characteristics and sources

Is there any footage of AIM-120 doing 180 or sources on the degree of turn AIM-120 can do?

Currently we do have footage of MICA doing 180, and we have a source stating a 100 degree a second turn from the French MoD.

I do, however I’d discuss it in other threads or on discord as to avoid cluttering mica discussion.

Then they have similar turn capabilities, but the C-5 has more energy from the booster.

C-5 would still be around 30G single plane, 45G dual plane while MICA can do 50G single plane and 75G dual plane thanks to TVC.

MICA is limited to 50G, as-is the AMRAAM. Both are combined plane. The AIM-120 would be 35G single plane.

That could be a neat change to differentiate the tech tree S5 and event S4 a bit more.

Regarding the conversation Mig23_M and DirectSupport had. Let’s remember that for now AIM120C5 is not so close to happen. Also MICA EM got upgrades of it’s seeker in order to still be concurential to actual missiles so the late gen MICA use may have higher off-boresight angles.
I don’t know if documentation exist but it would be quite hard to believe MICA didn’t receive evolutions/upgrades since 1996 in order to keep up with newer missiles and the MICA NG would be the culmination of these upgrades to make it gain a significant step forward to catch up/ get better than most of it’s international counterparts.

French military doesn’t have the same “small incremental upgrades” culture as other wealthier countries have, so I wouldn’t bet on that.

Ofc we’d need some sources to confim or infirm that.

huh

always thought it was limited to mach 4 and not 4.5, that’s interesting
Much faster than the 530D.

Launched a 530D at bots flying at 5000m from an altitude of 10000m and a speed of Mach 1.5. The missile got to Mach 3.97 (real speed of 4200 km/h) and then started slowing down

Guidance delay plays a large part in turning capabilities, and the MICA should improve on that. I’m just afraid to get the guidance delay reduced cause that might cause more flatspinning.

it seems like the speed of the missile is what prevents it from flat spinning right now and as soon as its not at a high speed turns it into a roller coaster

I talked to Mig23M in DM on discord and he’s gonna investigate the range of MICA EM more. I still stand by the possibility of MICA EM outranging AIM-120A especially after all the bug fixes that they do.

They never got any upgrade unfortunately, but it never really needed it since it stayed relevant for a long time.

In terms of BVR capability:
MICA EM > AIM-120A

MICA EM = AIM-120C-5

MICA IR > AIM-120C-5

AIM-120D > MICA IR

Why are you comparing the mica ir to an aim120c.

MICA IR is also a BVR missile, both are BVR missiles.

not sure about that tbh.
MICA IR is more maneuverable and has a nice surprise effect to it, but it’s around half the range per public figures

range is only half the story it would be SIGNIFICANTLY more difficult to defeat

It’s an infrared guided EM it’s not a real upgrade

How would MICA IR best out AIM120C5 when it has less max range than MICA EM? Do you talk about the 180° turns capabilities?

MICA IR has benefits in terms of BVR capability over AIM-120C5. The MICA IR cant be flared away, but C5 can be notched/chaffed. Further, MICA IR does not provide any warning and is completely silent.

It would beat out the MICA EM in BVR capability even though slightly less range. Currently MICA EM screams at any RWR within a 20km range. It can also be notched and chaffed. The MICA IR also has a higher gimbal limit so its able to find targets easier after traveling awhile.

So you are comparing an IR missile to an ARH.
First of all moderno airplane have systems that can detect incoming IR missiles secondly it’s an Ir missile
So from long ranges it’s easier to flare than Is to defend an aim120c.
