The Mirage 2000-5 Mk.2 BG is the double seater version of the Mirage 2000-5 Mk.2 EG we got in game, the thing that makes it special is the fact that not even 2 weeks under water can stop this beast.

The Mirage 2000-5 history

The Mirage 2000-5 was developed by Dassault in the late 1980s as a privately funded upgrade to restore the aircraft’s export appeal after sales of the earlier Mirage 2000 had declined. Announced in April 1989 and first flown on 24 October 1990, it introduced the RDY multitarget radar, the MICA fire-and-forget missile (allowing up to six to be carried), and a modern glass cockpit drawn from Rafale technology, while retaining the same airframe and SNECMA M53-P2 engine.

France converted 37 of its Mirage 2000Cs to the 2000-5F standard, which entered service around 1999–2000. Export customers followed quickly: Taiwan ordered 60 aircraft in 1992 (the first deliveries arriving in 1996), Qatar bought a dozen in 1994, Greece acquired the more advanced 2000-5 Mk 2 version, and the United Arab Emirates developed the further-enhanced Mirage 2000-9. These upgrades turned the type into a true multirole fighter that remains in service with several air forces into the 2020s.

In Greek Service

In August 2000 Greece ordered 15 brand-new Mirage 2000-5 Mk2 aircraft (10 single-seaters and five two-seaters) plus the upgrade of 10 existing single-seat airframes to the same standard. The five new two-seaters, designated Mirage 2000-5BG Mk2 (serials roughly 505–509), were delivered from the mid-2000s and entered service with 331 Squadron “Theseus” at Tanagra Air Base (114 Combat Wing).

These aircraft carry the full RDY-2 radar, MICA missiles, SCALP-EG cruise missiles, Exocet anti-ship missiles, advanced ICMS Mk3 self-protection suite and modern glass cockpit of the single-seat version. The only major difference is the absence of the internal 30 mm cannons. They are used for conversion training, operational missions with a pilot and weapons-system officer, and remain in front-line service with 331 Squadron alongside the single-seat 2000-5EG Mk2s.

More Info

The Mirage 2000-5 Mk.2 BG is the two-seat (dual-control) variant of the advanced multirole Mirage 2000-5 Mark 2 operated exclusively by the Hellenic Air Force (HAF/Greek Air Force). It is the dual-seat counterpart to the single-seat Mirage 2000-5EG (or -5 Mk.2) and represents one of the most capable late-production versions of the Mirage 2000 family.

Background and Greek Procurement

Greece originally ordered 40 first-generation Mirage 2000s under the “Talos” program in 1985 (36 single-seat EG + 4 two-seat BG), delivered from 1988. These later received upgrades (including AM.39 Exocet anti-ship capability) and were redesignated EGM/BGM.

In August 2000, Greece ordered the more advanced Mirage 2000-5 Mk.2 standard:

  • 15 new-build aircraft from Dassault (10 single-seat -5EG + 5 two-seat -5BG).
  • Upgrade kits for 10 existing single-seat EGM airframes to the same -5 Mk.2 standard (performed by Hellenic Aerospace Industry / HAI).

This produced a total fleet of 25 Mirage 2000-5 Mk.2 aircraft (20 single-seat + 5 dual-seat BG). Deliveries of the new aircraft began around 2004–2007; the last production Mirage 2000 overall was a Greek example handed over in November 2007 at Tanagra. The older non-upgraded EG/BG fleet was eventually retired (around 2021), leaving the -5 Mk.2s as the active Mirage force.

The five new-build dual-seaters carry serials in the 505–509 range (e.g., 505 was an early development/evaluation aircraft; 507 has appeared at events such as RIAT 2025). They serve with 331 Mira “Theseus” (All-Weather Squadron) of 114 Combat Wing at Tanagra Air Base.

Key Features of the -5 Mk.2 (Shared by EG and BG)

The Mark 2 is an enhanced multirole development of the earlier Mirage 2000-5, incorporating many systems derived from or parallel to Rafale development. Main upgrades include:

  • Thales RDY-2 radar — multi-mode pulse-Doppler with look-up/look-down, track-while-scan (up to 24 targets tracked, 8 prioritized), simultaneous engagement of multiple targets with MICA missiles, air-to-ground modes including synthetic aperture radar (SAR) mapping and moving-target indication (MTI). Detection ranges against fighter-sized targets are often cited around 100–130+ km depending on conditions.
  • Modern glass cockpit with larger color multifunction displays, HOTAS controls, and improved human-machine interface (NVG-compatible LCDs on the Mk.2).
  • Thales Totem 3000 laser-gyro INS/GPS (far more accurate and faster-aligning than the older ULISS system).
  • Advanced ICMS Mk.3 integrated electronic warfare / self-protection suite.
  • On-board oxygen generation system (OBOGS).
  • Secure radios, tactical datalink (for MICA mid-course guidance and situational awareness), and modular avionics/mission computers.
  • Optional compatibility with Damocles laser designation pod and other modern stores.

The airframe retains the classic Mirage 2000 delta-wing layout with fly-by-wire controls, powered by a single SNECMA M53-P2 turbofan (~64 kN dry / ~95–98 kN with afterburner). Performance is essentially identical to other late Mirage 2000s: max speed ~Mach 2.2 at altitude, service ceiling ~50,000–59,000 ft, combat radius/range in the 1,500+ km class (ferry range over 3,300 km with external tanks), and nine hardpoints for a wide weapons load.

Armament (typical for Greek -5 Mk.2) includes:

  • Up to 6 × MBDA MICA (IR or RF/active-radar versions) for beyond-visual-range and dogfight roles.
  • Magic 2 short-range IR missiles (more common on older variants).
  • AM.39 Exocet anti-ship missiles (capability retained/integrated on Greek Mirages).
  • SCALP-EG (Storm Shadow) cruise missiles for long-range precision strike (a key Greek capability).
  • Conventional bombs, laser-guided munitions, rockets, and the internal twin 30 mm DEFA 554 cannons (single-seaters; dual-seaters have the same structural provisions where applicable).

The dual-seat BG is fully combat-capable (not a pure trainer). The rear cockpit has appropriate displays and controls for an instructor or weapons systems officer, making it useful for conversion training, complex missions, and operational flying.

Role and Current Status

Greek -5 Mk.2s (both EG and BG) focus primarily on all-weather air defense/interception over the Aegean, where they have a strong reputation for performance in air-to-air engagements. They also provide multirole strike (including maritime strike with Exocet and deep strike with SCALP-EG). They operate alongside F-16s and the newer Rafale EG/DG fleet.

As of recent reporting, roughly 24 of the original 25 -5 Mk.2s remain in service with 331 Squadron. Support contracts and long-term fleet decisions (possible further upgrades, sales of older types to fund more Rafales, or life-extension) continue to be discussed, with current support arrangements noted as running toward the late 2020s.

In short, the Mirage 2000-5 Mk.2 BG is a modernized, glass-cockpit, RDY-2-equipped dual-seater that gives the Hellenic Air Force a highly capable trainer/operational fighter optimized for the demanding Aegean environment, combining strong air-to-air performance with genuine multirole strike options. It was among the last Mirage 2000s ever built.
