Spoiler
The MiG-35 product 9.61 is a 4++ generation multi role fighter made by the united aircraft cooperation and designed by the Mikoyan design bureau. With MiG-35 black 961 being the first and only unit made under with the 9.61 designation, being built for the MMRCA for the IAF as part of the evaluation process along side its brother MiG-35D Black 967, with Black 961 also being built by converting a previous MiG-29K prototype specifically Black 941 in to a MiG-35. With the aircraft being an modification of an existing MiG-29K 9.41 mostly only receiving an new AESA radar and fire control modification, it would also retain alot of its Indian DNA through retaining onboard systems such as the Sagem Sigma 95 Sat nav system, radio equipment designed by HAL and Indian Tarang RWR.
Aircraft history:
Spoiler
The history of the MiG-35 starts in 2007 when RSK MiG decided to participate in the Indian MMRCA competition, with MiG first building an MiG-35 tech demonstrator in 2007. Later in 2009 MiG would complete 2 more MiG-35 prototypes given the airframe number black 961 for the MiG-35 and black 967 for the twin seater MiG-35D, both black 961 and 967 in fact was built of converting two already existing MiG-29K/KUB prototypes (Blue 941 and 947). After being built would be tested and evaluted by the IAF, with the first demonstration flights being carried out in October 2009 with Russian pilots behind the controls. This was followed by retaining some selected Indian pilots for training on the MiG-35s. After this the MiG-35s would fly to Jaisalmer air base, located in the Rajasthan desert were they would under go tests aimed at verifying its performance at places with high ambient temperatures. This was followed by tests in the high altitude areas of the Himalayas, Jammu and Kashmir. These were again carried out at Leh Air Base. The tests also included takeoffs and landings with full combat load from locations at an altitude of more than 3500 m. The final tests would be carried out in Russia in April 2010 , at the Akhtubinsk and Zhukovsky air force bases with Indian pilots behind the controls and completing 18 flights including testing of weapons systems on board with the launching of an R-77 at an unnamed aerial target and attacks on ground target with the KAB-500KR TV guided bomb. Sadly the MiG-35 was eliminated from the MMRCA in 2010 with the Typhoon and Rafale advancing to the next stages of the MMRCA. After the MMRCA ended MiG-35 black 961 would be converted back in to an MiG-29K to replace the crashed MiG-29KUB 947 which was lost in 2011. but in 2014 the airframe would be lost in a crash of its own.
