It was able to do that…
To a certain extent, it basically had a really big mig23 radar with mti
This radar only started being installed on it in 1978. Before that it was as blind as a mole. It was an incredibly useless aircraft even by Soviet standards — yet for some reason it was produced in the hundreds.
probably becasue it scared the US
I doubt it. More likely it’s because in the USSR the top party leadership sometimes made decisions that lacked common sense. The MiG-25 is not a unique example of that.
Are you discussing the MiG-25? The thing that was designed to intercept nuclear armed bombers and reconnaissance aircraft?
If you are going to insult it, do so in the correct thread, and make fun of it for failing the latter task. It was not until later that they equipped it with look down capability - something that was an afterthought because those regions were thought to be properly protected by SAM’s and ground radar at the time.
What do you mean by insulting? I just pointed out that the aircraft was an anachronism and couldn’t perform the tasks relevant to it.
It would have had no issues intercepting American nuclear bombers or reconnaissance aircraft if it wasn’t for skunkworks developing the absolutely insane U-2 and SR-71.
It did exactly as they outlined in the requirements for the design of the aircraft, when it needed to do more they developed newer models and newer aircraft. Yes, it was an insult. You called it blind as a mole, this is an insult.
Was the F-4C blind as a mole? Defenseless as a baby seal?
Dude, it entered service in the ’70s. What bombers could it possibly intercept without any issues, what are you even talking about?
It was designed for high-altitude interception of fast targets — and it failed at that task as well, due to insufficient speed and limited range.
Name a bomber the MiG-25 would struggle to take down prior to the improved radar being introduced? It was more than sufficient for the role, fulfilled all design requirements put forth in the request to make it, and had few issues doing so.
Any bomber using the low-level penetration approach. Basically, literally any strike aircraft from the 1960s onwards. And also any missile-carrying bomber with stand-off weapons in the few-hundred-kilometer range.
By that time the most advanced strat bomber US had was the b52 which was already food for the mig21…
Foxbat sure had a lot of issues and imo although iconic it wasn’t the best machine ever, but ppl tend underestimate it. The fact that It managed to destroy a modernized hornet from the most trained navy in the world with a r40 missile while being super outdated with super crap maintenance is just unfathomable to me, i have some huge respect for that plane.
There were other planes to deal against those, 25 role was more specific.
The MiG-21 has even more trouble intercepting a B-52 than the MiG-25, lol.
I guess someone was rather ticked off by me pointing out this was not the foxbat thread and decided to report my message when it didnt break any rules.
Not cool.
Frankly, there were no effective countermeasures against this at all, as the use of the F-111 in Vietnam clearly demonstrated. And the MiG-25 had no specific role, since no doctrine envisioned bombing the USSR with unguided free-fall bombs like in the 1950s. Long-range bomber interceptions were supposed to be handled by the Tu-128, and the fact that it remained in service all the way until the MiG-31 entered service speaks volumes about the actual capabilities of the MiG-25.
Oh cmon, you guys don’t post anything here anyway.
Like i said It wasn’t the best plane ever but it was very important for the soviet airforce, without the 25 the 31 wouldn’t exist.
While he really played with that one slapping not a bug on and then removing it just to slap it back
31 actually did stuff in russia unlike the 25, to be fair it’s kinda carried by its missile
First try to name a mission for which it was actually important. Considering that the B-58 was retired and the Valkyrie was cancelled. Without it, the Zaslon would have been installed on a more advanced aircraft. Btw the MiG-31 inherited a number of shortcomings from the -25.
