Mikoyan-Gurevich MiG-29 Fulcrum - History, Design, Performance & Dissection (Part 2)

Weird question but would a hyphen or period be more appropriate (or professional/accurate) for MiG-29 models?

I.e. MiG-29 9.13 vs MiG-29 9-13?

I’ve noticed a lot of people, mostly just on the forums, spell the older models like 9-13 but the newer models like 9.41.

i might be partially to blame for this one. Most of the sources use hyphen, but i saw one or two that use period. And with my job i barely use hyphen but use a lot of periods or underscores so i started to use period by pure reflex

Definitely not JUST you lmao.

The best answer i’ve gotten is that writing it with the dots (“9.12” = “изделие 9.12”) is closer to original Soviet/Russian factory designations, but the dashes (“9-12” = Izdeliye/Product 9-12) came around from Western aviation communities, and the reason for that is all over the place, neither being wrong, just coming down to personal preference.

This is the answer I expected tbh, considering stuff like the MiG 1.44

Thanks for the answer.

R-77 life in full uptier lobby. Everything got cleaned up before i even got close to fire mine

It’s usually either that or you vs 8 because team folded. Either way, top tier game usually ends before it even properly biegun.
Bonus points if you had a big booster active.

That would be Rafale M.

How does the MiG-29M compare to the MiG-29K.

Is the weight and engine power a large difference?

I’m thinking of getting the M as my next squad vehicle

29M has better wepons kit (r27 and more r77’s)
while the 29k has a better flightmodel

After playing both aircraft fully spaded and at their maximum capabilities, I can honestly say that I prefer the MiG-29KR.

First of all, countermeasures. Even though the MiG-29M carries 60 standard flares, while the MiG-29K has 64 large caliber countermeasures, I can definitely feel the difference. The larger flares are much more effective, meaning I don’t have to spam them nearly as much. As a result, the MiG-29KR gives me much better survivability throughout the match because I can manage my countermeasures much more efficiently.

Then there’s the flight model. The 29KR simply feels better to fly. It’s very responsive, pulls hard, turns well, and gives you the feeling that you’re in complete control of a capable fighter that can compete against anything.

The weapon loadout also wasn’t as big of a downgrade as I expected. On the 29M I usually flew with 1× R-27ER, 1× R-27ET, 4× R-77s and 2× R-73s.

Regarding the R-27ER, it was definitely useful in certain situations, especially when you were chasing someone from behind. Its higher speed and stronger radar lock made it much harder for the enemy to notch, so it could secure kills that an R-77 sometimes wouldn’t.

As for the R-27ET, I rarely used it. In full uptiers, almost every aircraft has MAW System, so as soon as you launch an IR missile, the enemy gets alerted, pops a few flares, and the ET usually misses. That said, in close range engagements, within about 2 km directly behind an unaware target, the ET is still an almost guaranteed kill.

Without the R-27s, the 29KR is left with six R-77s, but honestly, I don’t think that’s a major disadvantage. The MiG-29 was never an aircraft that truly excelled at very long-range BVR combat anyway. I usually engage from around 20 - 30 km, launch one or two missiles to pressure the enemy, and then transition into medium range or closer engagements. That’s where the R-77 becomes much more effective, so in practice I don’t really miss the R-27s that much.

The radar and RWR are essentially the same, so there’s no meaningful difference there.

Finally, I also think the MiG-29KR simply looks better. Since it’s the most modern naval Fulcrum, I also believe it deserves improved MFD’s, the correct HUD symbology, and its historical Thales TopSight-E HMD. Those additions would make the aircraft feel much more complete and accurately

How cool would it look if the damaged radome would show a partially destroyed radar. (instead of pilot feet)

Maybe one day when gaijin updates the potato game engine.

Finally joined the gang :)

I wanna point out somethings tho;

this thing literally drinks the entire fuel and wtf happened to drag chute?

hook for carrier landings

Didn’t this version also had drag chute alongside with hook? i think i saw a picture where 29K was landing with drag chute, might be wrong tho.

and that removes the hook

it is either or IRL

Well in that case drag chute would’ve been much better choice since carriers are limited to certain maps and its definitely not worth land on them.
