Mighty Hotas players, HELP!

Hello everyone!!!

I’ve just ordered a X56 Hotas, some say it’s a bad investment some say it’s working no problems after years and years, if anybody has a x56 I’d love to know your experience and steal your settings 👀🥺.

I’m both thrilled and scared of this purchase, I am well aware that the learning curve it’s going to be a nightmare at the start and get slowly better, BUT, at the same time I’d assume the experience is gonna be nuts once I get a good grip of what does what.

For people who play with hotas, what was the “nightmare” you encounter? I’m trying to prepare myself mentally.

And if anybody is wondering, yes I do play Sim and been thinking about Dcs lately a lot, first I wanna get acquainted with the controls of the hotas then cry myself to sleep on DCS, step by step.

Thanks everyone.

I play HOTAS in SIM. The worst nightmare is the responsiveness of the joystick. If the sensors are bad and the gimbal too hard, it will be a pure suffering.
Key bindings are fun, but can take years to find the most ergonomic setup.

I have a Virpil HOTAS, with a grip that is very similar if not identical to the X56 one. Can share some of my findings in term of button assignements.

I wouldn’t go so far and say nightmare: As with everything new one learns, there is a certain learning curve, which however can be mastered of course - and soon it will be second nature for you.

What I would recommend is to well think beforehand what functions you want to assign to what buttons/axis! For myself (Thrustmaster HOTAS Warthog user) I made this little help here: Controlls WAR THUNDER EN - Google Presentaties)

Spoiler

And of course as always: Allow yourself to struggle at the beginning and don’t get discouraged: You’ll get there! And if in doubt, always feel free to ask around for (concrete) tips and ideas!

Oh lord, eh, I assume it’s gonna take a while to learn what does what, other then that doesn’t seem more complicated then recovering data from a HDD

Well, depends where you start: If it’s with props and early jets, you’ll need far less functionalities, obviously…

It’s not to learn but to find. Key bindings are not universal. Each person has it’s own most ergonomic setup. You can take an others person schema, but if in the battle your body reflex tends to hit another button for an action, it’s better to rebind it.

I’ll be starting top tier jets as I played Sim and enjoy it especially in VR but can’t get a proper handling out of mouse and keyboard it feels like it just doesn’t so what I want, that’s why I’m going hotas

Totally agree with you! I’d much rather have a starting point and try to figure it out from there and if I don’t get a proper “starting” point I’ll start from 0
