Hi Team,
One question: what`s the catch with MIG-29G in germany?i just grinded it, and all missiles are IR.
The gameplay with this jet is, indeed, “heat fighting”?? (noob question)
Thanks

R-73Es are your main IR guided missile
R-27ER1s are your main SARH (radar) guided missile
R-27ET1s are an IR guided version of the R-27ER1s good for long range sniping, but thats about it I think
Your best combo is likely 4x R-73Es and 2x R-27ER1s. The R-27s are really really strong SARH missiles
Usually higher tier Soviet jets tend to be very good at dog fighting using cannons due to the maneuverability.
Thanks for the response.
But the gameplay would be 2 choices then?
R27ER1 = long distance like fakour on F14.
R73E = flank the enemy and destroy them from behind, right?
Strategy would be like always go flanking the enemy then?
You have 3 types of A2A misisles
Fox-1 or SARH (Semi-Active Radar Homing)
These require continuous radar lock by the launch aircraft to guide them onto target. Defeating this type of missile requires defeating the launch aircrafts radar using chaff. R-27ER is an example of this.
Fox-2 or IR (infared)
These are fire and forget missiels that lock onto a target’s heat signature and are defeated by flares. Some missile have “IRCCM” (Infared counter countermeasure) which makes them harder to defeat using flares. R-73s are an example of this and they have IRCCM
Fox-3 or ARH (Active Radar Homing)
These missile have a built in radar seeker and only needed to be guided to within about 20km of the target by the launch aircraft before the onboard radar takes over allowing the launch aircraft to disengage. Some aircraft can guide multiple onto different targets. To defeat these, you need to defeat the radar seeker in the misisle using chaff. Fakour-90s are an example of these
I only have experience fighting the Mig-29G and have never flown it, so if anyone else is able to jump into this thread and answer from a first person perspective i’ll let them take over, but your best bet to avoid the early game Fox-3 volley is to stay low and use terrain to block line of sight with the enemy as much as possible. Once the “furball” begins, then move in, if anyone is off the ground and out of multipathing (the “safe” ish zone below 60m where radar missiles struggle) then your best bet is the R-27ER, they are extremely fast and potent missiles. Otherwise, your best bet in a dogfight will be the R-73s, they can be used in any aspect, but the IRCCM works best from behind. Especially effective if the target has bled a lot of energy. Also dont forget about your gun, I think its half decent in the Mig-29.
So basically below 60m the enemy`s radar wont lock me? (noob question…im kind of new in this game)
No, at lower BRs, with early radars, flying low can hide you from a radar by hiding in the “noise” produced by the ground reflecting radar singals.
But higher BRs, like where the Mig-29G is located, most radars can handle that without issue.
Multipathing is really really complicated to explain, but here goes a really basic explanation.
Think of it like the ground is a mirror, with a “copy” of your aircraft on the ground below you. When you fly below about 60m, the missile confuses this “reflection” with you and hits the ground instead. However, if the missile is coming down at a steep enough angle, it will still hit you on the way to impacting your “reflection”. Its most effective against missiles also fired from fairly low altitude.
Also if you are flying really low, then missile like F-90s and Aim-54s have fairly decently sized warheads and the splash damage from them impacting the ground can still cause major damage to your aircraft.
It is best to learn how to notch and chaff incoming missiles rather than relying on multipathing (especially as hopefully it will be lowered/removed in the future)
A guide for BVR combat:
I’ve played the Mig-29(9-21A) a bit, and it is close enough to the G. It only lacks the R-73s, and it has less fuel efficient engines.
The strategy I use in an uptier is to stay low, and don’t be the first one to the furball. Stay aware of your RWR and surroundings too. Only launch the R-27ERs when the opponent is unable to go behind cover or reliably multipath, because they are fairly hard to defeat otherwise.
It has decent velocity and ballistics, but it being not centred combined with its low ammo count harm it.
