Merkava Mk4 missing 250mm of side armor

I’ll go straight into it. Merkava Mk4, according to War Thunder, has 400mm of NERA. Merkava Mk3, according to War Thunder, has 150mm of NERA. How come 150mm is giving the same amount of armor as 400mm of the same material? it makes no sense. I already know the armor it self in the Merkava Mk4 is not correct but you cannot ignore the 250mm difference in the side armor.

You’re using the M325 HEAT-FS round with 480mm of penetration to show the protection level of this NERA. The NERA on both these tanks practically exhausts the penetration of any HEAT round, and it’s a very poor way to measure the effectiveness of the armour.

Most tanks will be firing APFSDS, which the NERA has a much lower level of protection against.

Sure, but the Merkava Mk.4 is still supposed to have much better chemical protection on the side than the Merkava Mk.3, yet ingame, despite having a much thicker amount of NERA on the side (Even thought it’s supposed to be SLERA) It has less Chemical protection there then the Mk.3… like how’s that logical in any way?
Should be able to tank Tandem warhead ATGMs IRL

Even though it can, I don’t think Gaijin would allow it to resist Vikhrs and other tandems because it would upset a certain section of the playerbase (wink wink nudge nudge)

I know, I just used the same type of shell to show that there is literally no difference in the side armor

Yeah well… if they added both SLERA armor and the LAHAT ATGM for Merkava Mk3+4 I’m sure it would be crashing down all the Russian tanks in-game.(not to talk about the Namer with 40 tons of air inside and a weaker Spike ATGM than what it should be)

“should” is on paper IRL but as IRL experiences often teach us stuff that “should” on paper are often wrong… especially when it can to western systems in recent years.

by know we got enough data IRL to see those would be overkill and no chance of “resisting”

Well they pretty much overbuff Russia that why we don’t see their turret flying often when we killed one (very disappointing)

yep, the west just care about their crew…

I have good news for you…

You realize that most Merkava crews are hardly ever killed and the tanks tend to only get M-killed with an extremely high crew survival rate.

The Merkava is easily one of the most well protected tanks in the world, and it really shows IRL with just how well protected the crew inside is, which tend to survive lots of encounters. But ofc no tank is invincible ¯_(ツ)_/¯

Thank you for your input on the conversation! Do you have anything else to add?

Friendly reminder not to post pictures that involve the death of tank crews. It’s not appropriate nor relevant to the discussion at hand.

This is from a report about the second Lebanon War written by the lead historian of the idf that says that out of 7 merkava 4 tanks that were hit only 2 needed to be towed for repairs and none of the crew were killed or injured. It also states that all the merkava 4s and most of the other tanks that were hit were hit by advanced atgms such as the kornet and Métis atgm
