Introduction

The Mbombe 8 is the largest member of Paramount Group’s family of mine-protected 4x4, 6x6 and 8x8 armoured vehicles. Developed in South Africa as a highly mobile infantry combat vehicle, the Mbombe 8 combines a relatively low-profile armoured hull with a large payload capacity, high road speed and substantial mine and ballistic protection. The vehicle is designed around a modular architecture capable of accepting a wide variety of weapon systems and mission equipment, with Paramount specifically marketing the platform for integration with both Western and Eastern-origin systems.

The Mbombe 8 was first unveiled in 2016 and has since been developed into a family of configurations for different customers and requirements. Paramount describes the vehicle as having a semi-flat mine-resistant hull rather than the more conventional V-shaped arrangement, allowing the vehicle to retain substantial blast protection while keeping the overall centre of gravity relatively low. The platform provides STANAG 4569 Level 3 ballistic protection as standard, with Level 4a and 4b mine/blast protection. The current Paramount specification lists a maximum road speed of 110 km/h, an operating range of approximately 800 km and a payload of up to 9 tonnes.

At AAD 2026, Paramount displayed the Mbombe 8 fitted with an ASELSAN SARP 30 unmanned turret.
The SARP 200/30 is an uncrewed, stabilised turret designed specifically for integration onto armoured combat vehicles. Its primary weapon options include the 30 mm Mk44/Mk44S Bushmaster II or the Russian 30 mm 2A42, while a number of 7.62 mm machine guns can be fitted as the secondary weapon. The turret has a 200-round 30 mm ammunition capacity and 500 rounds for the machine gun, with -9° to +50° elevation and unrestricted traverse through a slip ring. It also incorporates automatic target tracking, laser rangefinding, computerised fire-control functions and fire-on-the-move capability.

The Mbombe 8 SARP 30 is the first South African IFV/armoured car configuration that has access to FnF missiles, with the SARP 30 turret being compatible with a wide range of both eastern and western options, Spikes being the most likely western candidate. Due to this, as it stands, the Mbombe 8 SARP 30 is the most capable South African IFV produced to date.
