Map design-NAVAL

As a veteran WT player i have been here since nearly the launch of the game, i only play RB and i play it for my own enjoyment. i play matches to win matches, i have had a premium account for most of the last decade so i don’t care about SL, or the grind. i am generally good with 99% of ground maps save one or two.
I already know Gaijin will not era separate the tiers (to keep the player base together) so i have just gotten used to seeing PT 76s in my WWII games (where i prefer to play) even though i find it annoying and immersion breaking.
my real problem is naval.

I love playing with my boats and ships but there are a few items that are huge problems in map design.

1.tier lock-all maps not for boats (the tiny ones) should have no level cap. it forces players who are above mid tier into a very few really badly designed maps. there are only 7 maps without a top tier lock above 6.3 and 5 of them are garbage. especially now that Kvarken has been completely removed.
You could literally double the available maps if the cap on all the 6.0+ were removed.

I have the reverse problem with RGBs because many of the newer maps are tier locked for 5.0 or higher so we cannot fight WWII battles on them.

2.open water maps-they are dumb (jungle, la manche etc…) and i won’t play on them i will exit out and drop in another nation or wait out the 9 minutes. maps with line of sight blocking terrain lend themselves to close quarters combat which is where the game is actually more fun. examples of great maps i enjoy-aleutian islands, franz josef*, palau*, new zealand cape, japanese port
*these maps were great until the most recent update- the spawn points are now to far apart on Franz (we used to have some really great fights over points A/B) and the removal of the islands on palau made the map much less enjoyable even if it is still one of the best high tier maps.

3.locked spawn points for blue water- meaning destroyers cruiser or battle ships should be able to spawn in at any blue water point. the amount of traffic/spawn stacking because you cannot use all of the blue water points for any blue water classed ship creates an early game nightmare. i hate to say this but i used to play WOWS and they actually didn’t do something this dumb even though their game play was overall worse.

  1. i pretty much know Gaijin don’t really care and this is just a bit of venting, but i have said my bit.

One major improvement would be spawning in a battle line. No crashing into each other as much.

That only works with a few ships, to many battleships and cruisers are crammed into to little space.

Palau is arguably the best map at high tier and its spawns still suck since line of sight.

There’s a point where realism needs to be dropped for fun factor and nobody likes being instantly deleted right after they spawn because reasons like: torpedoes or an enemy battleship deciding it wants you out of the match.

‘b-but re-’

No. Ships from the 1960s (or in 1960s fits) can see WW1 dreadnoughts that no longer existed in their time. Or a 80s~00s SPG seeing IS-2s and the like (PzH2000). There’s nothing realistic about it. > FUN < is the objective word here and spawning in full line of sight of each other is more frustrating than anything else.

Especially if you’re in a ship who’s turning radius is not historically accurate, thus straight garbage at evading (Yamatos which are documented by multiple sides to have a 640m turning radius) and can be detonated from nearly 20km by shell types it should be effectively immune to. Consistently.

I have stated in other threads that most of the maps are either biased towards one team (Norway is the prime example, encounter heavily favors northwest team, domination is basically a free win to south team), are lazy open water maps or just have mediocre to garbage spawns. Fuego Islands are almost good. Palau is probably the closest to a perfect map barring spawns.

This might not be fully on topic but some interesting places might make some lower tiers more playable. If anyone wants to make these into suggestions I wont stop you.

The navy needs a complete overhaul. An open map where we shoot at each other at 20km like lobotomists with battleships and people with destroyers go quickly to their deaths and leave because they have no chance. Boats are unplayable because since 2.7 they play nonstop in the minority against destroyers and in UPTIER nonstop. Boat 4 people and destroyer 120+. He can hit me with one shot and I can only torpedo him. And he would like to adjust the long naval clash to BR and not just that nonsense SOJUZ that stands in the middle of the map and kills everyone. So newcomers or sailors who want a change and go here with their ship are just fodder for nonsense called SOJUZ. Boats have completely lost their fun. And I’m not even talking about the problem of missiles disappearing or missiles flying through without damage. in every game i see how the missiles fly through the ship into the sea and it does nothing and then the opponent hits me in the back of the ship and my ammo explodes in the front of the ship, how the hell is that? magical RNG nonsense and desynchronized servers. and when i take the plane then 4000LB bomb on the destroyer and NOTHING. it does nothing since the new update!!! it is absolute garbage after the new update.

I want to see Panama Canal / Great Lake map. That might make things more manageable.

no one seems to care honestly long time ago i made a suggestion list discussion for new naval maps as current ones are garbage

for example
night battles in naval on maps like guadalcanal which would be cool

That would be cool but night maps are a bit of a controversy. I could see it working with spot lights and flairs. Would give PT boats a leg up but also radar technology. I hope to see more strange watery places but remember these maps can be used in air battles as well.

Night maps would be cool… If it ain’t operation metro blue tint.

If you get the reference, congratulations, you’re old.

Especially with the use of spotting flares, spotlights or other gear like the post above me suggested.

But it’d require a massive system revamp instead of just ‘press x to target a ship’

Yes old Battle field with her solution to night time darkness. Gaijin likely would use a lot of full moon nights to solve the issue. USN boats would get a clear advantage with there radars

I would not mind an Aral Sea map back in the good old days for small boats. Gaijin can modify the ground map they have. Would make a cool suggestion.

Could just make it Stormy night and now you can’t see a damn thing. Shame you’ll never see that preset outside of customs

Aral Sea 1977 would be a cool before map

Or a what if 2057 if one of the many ideas to fix the lake where to happen. AKA black sea water

My final map test idea is the Caspian Sea

That’s all entirely subjective. I for one hate Palau and have it banned while wishing African Gulf was still available at BR 5.3+.

I have Denmark banned, jungle, midway and new guinea downvoted, i would downvote la manche as well if i had another to give, if i really had the option i would put all 5 on a banned list since i will never play on them. i play table top wargames as well as video games, battle fields with no/little terrain are a non starter with me. there has to be something there to encourage maneuver and flanking. blocking LOS terrain does that. so i do also really love Palau, and i loved Franz when the cap points and spawn points were closer together encouraging the use of the islands.

I don’t think anyone period likes spawning in and immediately being shot at.

Yes, you can do the same thing back but the point is not all ships are supposed to take the potentially ridiculous amount of incoming fire that happens in maps like Encounter Norway.

A good map should have a mixture of appropriate cover and open space as close to equal for both sides, which Palau does have. Other maps either have literally nothing, next to nothing or heavily biased towards a particular side.

Palau is not a good map. It’s so frustrating for big ships to get into capture point and you’re unable to use maximum firepower heading it. Palau is currently the map I’ve banned, and all conquest maps are downvoted.

Encounter is my favorite.

Ships are very large so hiding them with islands are hard. A map with too many islands also makes the go cap the point difficult for large ships. To be honest open sea maps is realistic with the one big cap. Your battle line is supposed to gain full control over an area over the other. In theory smaller ships and boats would have helped but this never panned out. The torpedo boat panic UK vs France. Subs where also planned to have a roll in the battle line but that never fully worked out until maybe today. Overall the whole thing is a tall order for Gaijin.
