We all know that the 20mm coaxial that the AMX-30 series of tanks gets has become useless agains lightly armoured vehicles.
Don’t get me wrong it still shreds helicopters and straight flying planes. But the lack of ap and it also being HVAP severely limits it’s usability as an anti light vehicles cannon. Afaik that was one of the reasons to equip the tanks with it in the first place.
Either change the belts to have ap instead of hvap or at least change the hvap percentage. The vest fix would just be making the hvap less prone to shattering. If a bmp rolls up to you side on and you try to kill it most of the shells will just shatter flat on the side. Sometimes even tracks and barrels barely take damage from the thing. That is less of an issue. I just want to be able to gun down bmps and btrs with the coax again.

I looked around to see if a standard AP shell exists for the 20x139 round and i only found SAP, which would have slightly less penetration but HE filler (you can use the Italian low tier 20mm to get a sense of the performance of such round). So i think the coax should have a mix of HVAP and SAP and for the amx-40 a mix of APDS and SAP.
The simplest solution is to redo the HVAP, apply the formula for small caliber AP instead of APCR, and reduce the probability of fragmentation. This will not only help AMX30, but also assist all vehicles using HVAP.

I mean I’ll take just the reduction of shatter chance. I cannot remember the last time I actually killed a tank with the 20mm

i call it the pea shooter because you have a better chance at killing a fly with hvap.
When I was driving the AMX40, I once fired at a BMP2M for more then five seconds, but all of my shells shattered or bounced off, forcing me to use the main gun to destroy it. The current HVAP is a disaster, as the armor piercing performance cannot be fully utilized, only bouncing and shattering. As I said, if the formula of HVAP is changed, everything will be easily solved.

The origin of the problem is actually because HVAP now uses the APCR calculation formula, which leads to endless fragmentation and bouncing. If the calculation formula is not changed, its fragmentation probability will not change. The simplest and most effective method to get rid of it is to change the HVAP calculation formula back to the AP calculation formula.

Yeah I know. But I have doubts of gaijin ever doing it because no fun is allowed.

watching a 20mm struggle to pen vehicles that i know all too well a 50 cal would handily deal with is never not frustrating. I remember back when the 20mm on the amx 30 was my main armament due to how useful it was against light tanks without expending my ammunition. Especially with the removal of the cement rounds from the 15mm on the foch which made it useless against light tanks due to gaijin still not giving it its assisted reload.

I recently played the amx-30acra to spade it. That one has a coax .50cal and I had more luck killing light tanks with it than the 20mm. The fact that the 20mm is almost twice the caliber but less effective is a shame
