40 degrees won’t protect against all types of top attack missiles, spikes go as high as 70 degrees, brimstone probably features high angle of attack as well, it’s just that it’s not modeled in game.
The APS probably protects well against stuff like loitering munitions that can’t top attack at too steep angles.
Spikes actually have advertised “Counter-APS” capability, probably thanks to the high angle of attack.

It’s also worse than the AMRAAM and the best it does is bring the Su 30 up to parity with the middle of the pack range wise.
