They’ve tried like 3 times now. There just isn’t the space without radically changing the airframe.
That does have floatation gear. But its smaller. As a result, max takeoff weight is 20% less than NH-90, it has no ASW capabilities, range is significantly less, half the dismounts, 40% fewer stretchers.
It’s just a different class of helicopter. To compare the two is pretty much the same as comparing NH-90 with CH-53K, they’re just designed to do different things.
Oh it looks like they’ve recently started adapting them to do sonar dipping. I suppose the other half of it is fitting them with torpedo’s or depth charges then.
Could make for a decent ASW helicopter, it’s got a smaller footprint, rugged and proven design, just needs to mount depth charges (probably dropped from inside) and torpedos instead of rocket pods
It’s already got sensors and everything, and we know the airframe can handle it because of the AH-1Z
Would be decent but there would be better options in the US inventory and certainly on the foreign market, naval helicopters don’t often take damage, ruggedness really isn’t a factor as much as range and endurance here.
I’m not really sure why they’ve decided it’s worth the investment other than that aforementioned floatation gear, which eliminates other US helicopters, so maybe its filling that area for them, but really every naval helicopter should have floatation gear.
It also depends on them fitting the equipment, right now all its doing is dropping sonobuoys for other aircraft/vessels to monitor, it has no equipment to monitor them itself.
On the international market though Wildcat is filling the same niche, but doing literally everything better (in a Maritime environment) plus having a full ASW capability, rather than just manually dropping sonobuoys.
otherwise F-18C (Fin) and F-15J(M) would’ve gotten them too
the Tyhoons ans Gripens as well, they do perform well but not that well, especially the Gripens could use a Better weapon to be more competitive as it’s now fighting mostly Heavier, larger and faster Missile carriers
@Smin1080p_WT has there been any consideration to make the new SPAA systems/current ones like the S1 Pansir up to 12.7, to be on pair with the best planes ingame? specially these new ones are supposed to be one of the best anti airs out there, and having them fight 11.0 aircraft feels something kinda unfair… not to mention that having stuff like the ADATS at 11.7 and .3 br later things like SLAMRAAM feels a bit unfair br wise… thanks a lot!
