It would depend what Sidewinders it got.
AIM-9P, it would be the same as any other F-5E.
AIM-9P-4, is the all aspect version.
AIM-9P-5, is all aspect, smokless motor, and IRCCM.

I mean the 120d is still a good missile, and afaik the 22 does have some level of IR detection, and I’ve heard of full on stealthy irst pods that can be added to it. Also I’m pretty sure the an apg 77v1 outclasses the captor e but I don’t have any numbers for the captor e, or the 77v1
idk I thought it would be a lower BR.
Doesnt matter which is better ultimately. So long as the Typhoon radar could lock on and guide a Meteor at a range of 50-60km or so, then the F-22s Stealth advantage is mitigated totally.
In a WVR fight, we have seen IRL that Typhoons can readily fight F-22s.
F-5E right?
US F-5E with 2x Aim-9Js is 11.0 (11.3 in SB)
Japanese F-5E FCU with 2x Aim-9P4 and 2x Python 3 is 11.3 (11.7 in SB)
But can it lock at 50-60km? Also the f22 was known to beat eft in BVR, and although like 2 eft beat f22 in a dogfight, we don’t have numbers on how many f22 beat eurofighters. Even if your right, at those ranges the aim120d will be very effective
Also take into account that people will take external pylons to get more missiles which only adds to the RCS.
.3 br higher and it gets 2x the missiles and much better ones to boot
IRST I think can lock on at a minimum at 50-60km and if we have ECM modeled even half well, then we know the Typhoons ECM can prevent an F-22 from locking until within 50 or so km. (as per a F-22 pilot iirc)
Captor-M i think has a good chance at getting a lock under those conditions and I think Captor-E is designed to toally mitigate that advantage entirely. Plus as Texas mentioned. External mounts will totally destroy the stealth and its a mute point entirely. (as otherwise the Typhoon could just defend and wait till the F-22 runs out of missiles then hunt it down with ASRAAM/IRIS-T)
I think Tranche 4 Typhoon vs F-22 wouldnt be quite so one sided as most think it would be. Will be very interesting to see compete in wargames in the future.
Anyway… back to the topic at hand… Brimstones?
Even the Chinese one is 11. It will still be worth it if it brings four Mavericks, which is the only reason it doesn’t have a lower BR in ground. I mean, I’m not sure about the CAS capability of the Swiss planes. Without Mavericks, it will have to have a BR of 10.3 in ground.
Fair points, however how is the irst going to get a proper lock, as isn’t it a passive detection system with no way to get range data? Also, the f22 own passive detection system can pinpoint the direction of a target past the regular search range of its radar. The way the f22 can use this to get a lock is by focusing its radar in that direction.
The F22 also has it’s own ECM systems, and those combined with it’s stealth would most likely make it so the EFT couldn’t lock at 50km
PIRATE has a ranging laser if im not mistaken. Unlike most IRST, it can be used to help guide missiles onto target.
I don’t think it does, but rather uses stadiametric rangefinding to provide an estimate.
an estimate on a target with significant IR reduction measures wont be too accurate, and PIRATE is too affected by outside factors to really be more than a MAWS that shows you what direction aircraft are coming from instead of missiles
IR doesn’t really come into it. Think of it like this, if you program into a computer the 3D dimensions of an F-22, it will be able to estimate how far away it is based on an image of it.
PIRATE is better thought of as FLIR with extra features rather than an old school IRST system like on the MiG-29.
She was laid down so technically a valid addition. ;)
at those ranges though, will it even be able to tell if its an f22? also, the radar sensors on an f22 can pinpoint a target at over 250 nm, and the MLD on f22 can also do what the pirate can, and with full spherical coverage
okay going via technicalities only the OS would be viable, the new version is an entirely different hull
