And people who like Top Gun are going to be more likely to like the F-14. There’s a reason why companies pay for product placement, and the F-14 has a hell of a placement. People like to pretend to be their heroes, real or fictional.
And, if I were to humor you, let’s say that only Americans and plane lovers will care about the F-14 (I disagree, but more on that later). The US is one of Gaijin’s biggest markets, as evidenced by the amount of premiums, event vehicles, and camos the tree has. I’m fairly certain that it has the most camos out of any of the tech trees, though I haven’t exactly checked the numbers of that, so I might be wrong. As for the other demographic, plane enjoyers, there’s a similar situation there. Air combat was the initial premise Gaijin sold the game on, and continues to be a major demographic for Gaijin, and the F-14 undeniably has a ton of star power within that community.
Of course, that assumes that Top Gun has only ever been a major hit in the states, which I don’t think is true. When Top Gun Maverick was released, it earned more from the international box office then it did from domestic with a little over half of it’s sales coming from international viewers. The franchise is huge the world over, and the F-14 is an iconic part of that franchise.
The plane has the starpower to steal the proverbial show, and that is evidenced by it being the most viewed trailer of the ‘modern’ era, and ranking 8th out of all the videos on the War Thunder channel, which doesn’t sound like much, until you realize that the videos with more views are all a decade old, whereas Danger Zone is only a couple years old. The hype for the F-14 was real, and the views reflect this. FFS, the title of the update is a reference to Top Gun.
