PD steers the beam mecanically
PESA uses phase shifting (see spoiler below) so that the beam is sent to a certain direction. They scan faster than normal radar. They have one transmitter and multiple receiver cells.

AESA works the same way as PESA, except each cell has its own transmitter. That means you can technically scan multiple areas at the same time, since a certain region of cells can be affected to one area and an other region to an other area. They can also change their frequencies, making them much harder to jam.
that evolution is particularly visible on ships and sam sites. where you needed one or even multiple rotating radars before, they now take the form of 4 plates integrated into the superstructure
