Which technically extends to the F-20 but still :p
so they had a good light fighter
made an awesome light fighter from it
then an even better multi role from that
and then they forgot about the 17 and made a Mediocre light fighter

The F-20 was trying to capture the F-5 basics instead of growing in size like the YF-17. For what it’s worth, the F-20 packed a lot of capability in a small package and had some unique (for the time) maintenance and servicing traits. Maintainability and cost was a big consideration for the project.
