History of the programme

Riepilogo

In 2011, the Italian and British sections of MBDA, MBDA UK and Italy, agreed on jointly developing a new ground-based air defense under the newly formed EMADS (Enhanced Modular Air Defence Solution) joint venture. The goal of this project was to create a new missile that could fit the Italian requirements based on the already existing British CAMM short-range anti-aircraft missile, integrated and enhanced with various new Italian parts. Indeed, the Italian army, air force, and navy were in dire need of replacing the old Aspide 2000, a missile initially developed from the American Sparrow that, after various upgrades, was reaching its scheduled retirement, which was supposed to take place in 2021. Five years later, in 2016, both Italy and the UK signed a Statement of Intent (SoI) in order to formalize and agree on the share of information and the industrial cooperation between the two countries. But unfortunately, due to the unstable Italian political scenario, things would have only gotten worse in the following years. Indeed, thanks to the various political shenanigans after 2018, the project accumulated nearly 3 years worth of delays. In this period, MBDA had to keep the Italian facilities that were producing standard CAMM parts running, as otherwise the production in Italy of the CAMM-ER would have been less convenient, and that could have threatened the continuation of the whole program. Even if the various delays caused a plenty of issues, the program went on regardless, and in late 2020, MBDA completed the first live fire of the missile from the Italian shooting range Salto di Quirra in Sardinia, usually used to test missiles like this one. In the following years, the program did not encounter other issues of the same matrix, and various other tests were carried out, using two different radars. The reason for such a choice can be found in the two branches of the Italian armed forces decisions, as the army decided to go with a product from one of Rheinmetall’s subsidiaries, Rheinmetall Italia, while the air force selected a product from Leonardo. Both radars are integrated into two different systems, the first one being Grifo and the latter being MAADS. Deliveries are scheduled to commence in 2025 for the army and the air force, while the navy might adopt it in the future, although

About the missile

Riepilogo

CAMM-ER is a modern radar-guided anti-air missile, capable of 360° coverage against a wide spectrum of targets, from small reconnaissance drones to supersonic missiles, mainly thanks to its great maneuverability and precision. In comparison with the standard CAMM, the new engine supplied by the Italian Avio Aero makes the missile longer by 1 m and 61 kg heavier and allows a nearly doubled range of over 45 km, while the standard missile can only reach 25 km. The launcher can accommodate up to 8 missiles, and it’s fitted on an Astra 88.45 BAD truck from Iveco.

The ASTRA ACTL is an Italian truck developed for the Italian army in 2002 by Astra, one of Iveco’s subsidiaries. It was appreciated a lot thanks to it’s flexibility, reliability and mobility. The one adopted for carry the CAMM-ER launcher, radar and command post is the ASTRA SM 88.45 BAD. The only difference compared to the normal Iveco MW320 are the hydraulic jacks. The Italian air force plan to use this platform for it’s launchers as well, but the radar and command post will be installed on the Tekne shelter carrier.
