M42, AMX-13 DCA 40, Crusader AA Mk.I And other similar vehicles shouldn't die to ammo explosions

Tanks with 40mm Bofors shouldn’t be dying to ammo explosions, especially the M42 and M19A1.

IRL, the propellant and HE filler would rarely get detonated after being hit by a shell. If any of the powder did get detonated, it would be too weak to has any noticeable effects due to the tank shell’s damage itself completely overshadowing it.

How it is right now, if you hit the ammo the tank just instantly dies. How it should be is hitting the ammo causes massive amounts of spalling from the shells violently ripping the metal casings into tiny fragments.

This would be a much needed buff (especially to crusader, M19A1/M42, and the CKW 335 thing) as they’re already behind most SPAA in terms of capability and survivability. It would be far more realistic aswell.

You think this would not cause the crew to decide to stop doing anything besides get away from the vehicle as fast as they could?

They don’t care. They will give their lives to serve the invisible flying camera. You could drown them in freezing water over and over and over and over again and they will still faithfully serve the guiding camera to the ends of the map.

I mean your facts sound right and I don’t know enough about 40mm to argue against you. But it’s already hard enough to killed the M19 and M42 so taking it out would make the one easy way to take them out making them that much harder. But if what you have said about these is true then I’d be on board

The only thing imo that makes it difficult to fight them is the insane amount of dust they make when they’re hitting your face, but that’s a problem with all autocannons, and despite it, it’s pretty common for people to get an extremely lucky shot on the ammo.

That’s also really annoying

Yeah

Yeah, but isn’t the point of this thread to talk about how that’s not realistic?? So your one surefire way to take them out would be gone?

The problem is that the small 40mm shells wouldn’t cause anymore damage than a 17 pound metal cone going mach 2 since it would disassemble the shell and dissipate the explosive powder into the air before it gets a chance to detonate in a confine case.
This is especially bad for M42/M19A1 as even if you did manage to detonate the ammo without completely destroying the whole shell, it still wouldn’t kill the crew and certainly not send the turret flying atomizing everyone in/on the tank. If anything, they would just act as a claymore since there’s more metal between the shells and the crew than between the shells and open air.

Also a simple 7.62 can easily kill the M19A1/M42’s gunner in just a couple seconds. only one of the two gunners actually functions as a gunner iirc. It’s just that newer players don’t know to use their MG.

Hmm ok.

Well yeah, but it’s more of, when I shoot an open top with APHE, you’d think that more just taking and engine and driver out.

Anyways, like I said I would be on board with ammunition explosion change for the 40mm if it’s realistic to IRL :)

Alot of my deaths is from shots destroying the horizontal turret drive and the driver/engine at the same time because of its wierd layout, so that’s something to consider.
autocannons aren’t the only things that suffer from ammo explosion bs. ATGM carriers like the M901 will die if one of the ATGMs, but something like the kriztema doesn’t.
