what about the 2a83 on T-14 which would be the emerging threat, US surely was aware of previous russian 152mm development for many years before which would also have been the emerging russian/soviet threat

This document is about the 1979, baseline M1, and talking about the old Chobham.
No russian MBT with a 152mm exists in service, it’s a problem that doesn’t exist

It shows where the armor is thickest for the base M1, which should allow us to derive a sort of estimate with other documents of how thick the A2C’s is.
If russian MOD will make such demand, US MOD will respond accordingly to a program of upgrade

Yes, and i mean as answered before “in service”, governments don’t react to tank warfare and make changes upon “testing demands” for tanks upgrades

Soviets tested nukes, so US ramped up its nuke testing and development and then Soviets also accelerated
