HISTORY/INFORMATION

Development of the M109 began in January 1952 after a conference in Washington, where the topic was self-propelled artillery. There was a need for a vehicle to replace the 155mm M44

The first prototype T195 appeared in 1959. after two more prototypes which all underwent some testing, production of the M109 was started in 1962

The M109 has undergone many modernizations over the years. The latest is version M109A6 Paladin, which is/was only in use in the USA

In 1969, 126 self-propelled 155mm howitzers were acquired from the USA (BMY), these were assembled at Kongsberg Våpenfabrikk. Norway chose the German version of the M109G vehicle. This has a wedge mechanism on the barrel, the American version has a screw mechanism. In 1986, the HFK (Army Supply Command) began modernization of the existing 155 mm gun (skyts), the main part of modification consisted of changing to a longer 39 caliber gun barrel (set that is, the gun barrel is 39 times 155mm long, 6.05m). The first 2 shooters (skyts) were modified in Germany, the rest at NFT in Narvik. The hulls were overhauled at Namek in Narvik, while Bjerkvik Tekniske Verksted took care of the drivetrain. The vehicle was now designated M109A3GN.

In 2005, the army’s stock has been reduced to 54 skets (skyts), 2 skets (skyts) have been retained by FLO as reference skets (referanseskyts), one transferred to FMU and the rest have been chopped

There is another updraded verison of this named M109A3GNM, i will try and find more information and make a new post

Norway acquired the M109 artillery carriages as early as 1969. They have been upgraded several times, and now have the designation M109A3GNM

The M109A3GN is the Norwegian version of the M109 Self-Propelled Howitzer
