History

The F‑22 Raptor was born from the Advanced Tactical Fighter (ATF) program, launched in 1981 to counter emerging Soviet threats like the Su‑27, MiG‑29, A‑50 AWACS, and advanced air defenses. After rigorous competition and prototype testing between Lockheed/Boeing/General Dynamics’s YF‑22 and Northrop/McDonnell’s YF‑23 (first flown in 1990), the YF‑22 was selected in April 1991 for its superior maneuverability, lower cost, and maturity. Full-scale development followed, with the first production-style F‑22 (“Raptor 4001”) taking flight on 7 September 1997 after extensive wind‑tunnel testing and materials evaluation. The F‑22 achieved initial operational capability in December 2005, entering service as the USAF’s stealthy, supercruise-capable air dominance fighter. With unmatched stealth, thrust-vectoring, and sensor integration, it set a new standard for aerial combat—but production ended in 2011 after 195 units, leaving the fleet to serve until its successor emerges via the Next Generation Air Dominance program.

My other topics if anyone is interested.

Feel free discussing about other 5th gen aircrafts in comparison to the F-22. Please let me know if i need to correct some errors too, thanks.

the oxygen system used to get pilot to 60k feet is powerful enough to make bubbles come out of your tear ducts

the F-22 can comfortably fly at 110 degrees AoA

Honestly mad to think that we could be quite close to seeing the F-22 + other 5th gens come to the game. My firm belief before todays leak was that we wouldn’t see the Raptor until atleast December 2026 or possibly even 2027.

It will be interesting to see how it’s going to be modelled and how it’s going to be handled, especially bug reports since it’s going to be fairly impossible to report most things if they turn out to be issues with proper documents since the more important and info-heavy documents are obviously classified and very illegal to own and distribute.

@DirectSupport do you have any of the sources for the F-22 mach 1.9 supercruise claim?

Personally its not surprising as gaijin has turned from an actual historical vehicle enthusiast game to a cash grab that srives to reach modernity as fast as possible.

i mean there is speculation from pilot the true ceiling of the raptor is more like 70-75k ft, limited to a little over 60,000 because of what would happen to the pilot if there was a loss of pressure at that altitude (not an issue ingame)

this means it could evade every SAM ingame by just chilling at 20km or higher at supersonic speed w/o burner, making it the perfect CAP platform

Ever since the F15E was added last year, I always thought the F-22 would finally be here in the end of 2025 and it seems like I predicted it, but take it as a grain of salt since there’s a chance that it’ll be pushed back further to 2026

Why would Gaijin wait 2 years to add anything beyond Typhoon, F-15E/C, Rafale, etc?
Also all the important aspects of F-22 for gameplay purposes are unrestricted.

we dont have max radar range, true top speed, true top speed on mil power officially stated (no burners). pilot testimony does fill in a lot of this stuff but unless gj changes rules on bug report it wont work

a lot of the official stats are insanely lowballed facades

Well F-18C’s mach 1.02 supercruise speed when clean is modeled in War Thunder despite there not being sources.
Knowing enough tends to make rather accurate flight models.

I doubt performance is low-balled, especially when dogfights data is entirely public as well.
Mach ~2.3 is likely its top speed after all.

True true.

There is also the possibility F-22 are intentionally detuned to maintain opsec and allow allies to actually win. It has no real marketing impact bc f22 is congressionally blocked from exports

The figures I think are lowballed the most by official sources are mil power supercruise speed and true operating ceiling

well, in my opinion the current war thunder are monstrous, the f22 is completely unsuitable for the current top tier, the maps are too small, and you might as well have to carry bombs with the f22 to get the RP

And gaijin will also make whatever they want since they said report based on guesses will not be accepted, and they also do not accept classified documents.

+1 Obviously I want to see 5th generation aircraft like F-22, F-35, Su-57, but with the current maps it would be horrible, and we still don’t have F-18 SuperHonet, Su-35, Gripen E and J10C

So whats left to add after we reach the end? Or will they shutdown the game and develop war thunder 2 instead?

The implementation of 6th gen or adding early vehicles that has never made it into the game could be a possibility.

There’s still plenty of vehicles that can be added, from modern down through WW2 and interwar and even WW1 vehicles there’s tons of options. Just look at the suggestions here on the forums there’s loads left that can come.

If you think 130x130km is too small… lol We don’t even have munitions that can cross even half of that at normal flying altitudes.

@Ωκεανος
We’re currently on War Thunder 7.
There doesn’t need to be perpetual additions either.

There are still plenty of planes to bring in game, not only for top but previous tiers as well. So many variants…
But i do believe after they satisfy the ^hunger^ of the masses to play the next ^best plane in the world^ , they’ll bring some actual gameplay into the game.
They can even make campaign mode and sell campaigns like single player games with expansions etc.
I don’t think there will be WT 2 , for the next 5 years at least.
