Llewellyn-class Minesweeper, HMCS Llewellyn (J278) (1942)

Description:
HMCS Llewellyn was the lead ship of her class of coastal minesweepers built for the Royal Canadian Navy during the Second World War, in which she would serve.

This suggestion is for her fit upon her commissioning into the RCN in 1942.

History:

Laid down in mid 1940, built by Chantier Maritime de St. Laurent, Île d’Orléans, Quebec. She launched on the 14th of November 1941, finishing fitting out and commissioning on the 24th of August 1942 in Quebec City.

Upon her commissioning she, and her sister, HMCS ‘Lloyd George’, would assist in escorting a convoy from Quebec City to Sydney, Nova Scotia, then moved on to Halifax from Sydney. Her duties at Halifax were sweeping the approaches to Halifax Harbour for mines. She would spend the entire war on this duty.

However sometime in ~1944 her armament was altered, with the removal of three .50", and the addition of two twin .303 machine guns on the bridge wings. This left her with a single .50" and four .303 MGs in addition to her minesweeping gear.

Due to the abundance of larger minesweepers available for the fleet, HMCS Llewellyn would instead be used as a guard ship for the reserve fleet then stationed at Halifax, where she would last until the 14th of June 1946 before being put into reserve herself.

She would recommission on the 25th of July 1949 as a tender at St.John, New Brunswick. She would be primarily based at HMCS Scotian with the naval reserve division for training duties. She would tour Newfoundland after its accession to a Provence of Canada. She would later also tender HMCS Brunswicker in 1951.

She would be de-commissioned on the 31st of October 1951, being sold in 1957 for mercantile use. She would founder off Cape Breton on the 28th of October 1960.
