Little John Adaptor

Tetrarch with “Littlejohn”

Spoiler

Source: Airborne Armour by Keith Flint

It was standard equipment for both the Tetrarchs and the M22s in service to airborne forces. The reason you can not find many pictures of them, is because most crews only carried them in reserve to be equipped on-the-field if necessary. The APSV projectile could be fired without the “Littlejohn,” albeit with weaker performance, but still better performance than the basic AP projectile. Meanwhile, equipping the adapter would remove their capability to use HE projectiles, and it’s for that reason that crews tended to forgo it.

Favourite at getting killed a lot in? It does not seem like your experience matches your sentinents.

Yes, those are excellent as free kills. Maybe the Challenger is not that awful, but the rest…

You said that with a straight face?
Each and every one of them are slow as hell, even the Challenger, becasue it’s steering does not work, and has a slower reverse speed than the speed with which a continent goes.

Firepower?
You mean high pen APDS that shatters on everything, while having awful angle pen and practically no damage?
Yes, this is the “Conqueror-syndrome” at work.

Likely.

The highest BR tank that he has a positive K/D in is the Churchill 3 xd.

Well, it wouldn’t effect the vehicles efficency at their BR, probably make them worse.
Only when seeing higher BR vehicles with more armor it would make a difference.

So it’s true that with the little John, they would become less efficent overall since it only boosts penetration but doesn’t improve the lethality.

That means it could just be an unlockable module that switches your gun to be using the little John, in case you want to use the vehicle at higher BRs.
But without scouting there would be little use for them compared to other light tanks.
Especially since the Crusader is considerd a light tank…

the link is to the organization of the squadron.

The supposed use of 1 LJ per troop is mentioned in the OP and many other sources - I have not attempted to substantiate it.

But if it is true then the organization of the squadron would allow for as many as 3/7 cars equipped with it.

Slightly off-topic. Anyone have information regarding the 2-Pdr Pipsqueak and it’s APDS ammo? For the Saladin prototype.

Best source I’ve found has been this old website via the wayback machine.

“This was designed to fire APDS rounds which would match the penetration of the ‘Littlejohn’ shot while still allowing HE shells to be fired. In fact the claimed performance was better, the 1,295 m/s shot penetrating 85mm of armour at 60 degrees at 900m. This gun was abandoned when a low-velocity 76mm cannon was selected instead, indicating a shift in role towards infantry fire support. Ironically, the specification is reflected in modern trends towards 30-50mm guns, firing sub-calibre armour piercing projectiles, for light AFVs.”
