According to Wikipedia Ger, Leopard crews can switch off the stab / FCS and fire the gun manually in every direction they want. The tank/fcs has 3 operation options of which 1 or 2 allow unrestricted manual aiming. Ofc irl the tank is not doomed when a target appears behind, would be foolish if so.
Right implementation would be: When you press the stab hotkey to disable the stabilzer, the restricted rear hemisphere (nowadays its even side+rear^^) should be gone.
As an MBT your focus should be about not getting flanked.
If you are shot at that from that “blind spot”, you are either dead or so heavily disabled that you wouldnt be able to fight back anyway.
If you see an enemy on your flank, you should not just rotate the turret but the whole tank, thats the fastest way of snapshotting targets in your back.
If you are trying to reverse push, there is no practical reason. All NATO tanks have great reverse speeds, so there is absolutely no reason to park in reverse to pull back quick, unlike say for example with Russian tanks, where at times I put my rear forward so I can pull back quicker, due to the lack of reverse speed.
Its a completely historical change that doesnt upset the balance of the game for anyone who uses their brain just a tiny bit.
Skill also takes into account of being able to deal with your vehicles capabilities. For me it took a while to get used to the Mig-21, just because how different it was.
Russians have to cope with bad gun depression and traverse rates, along with reverse speeds.
Nato tanks are typically best used Hull-down, and are not the best brawlers… and now the engine deck “blindzone”… oh gosh, I can tell you that NATO tanks are typically more user friendly.
Typically speaking, you should try to avoid being in a position where your engine interferes with your depression angle.
If you are in a HATO tank that doesn’t have god awful gun rotation you can actually turn your gun around in the time it takes an enemy to reload. I shot a swedish t72 earlier in the side even and only got his engine and just watched him helplessly try to rotate his turret to shoot me like 120 degrees and wasn’t able to to in 6 seconds lmao. I felt his pain, and wonder why he even bothered spawning that junk heap when he has access to leopards.
Lets limit half the nato tanks reverse to 4km and the other to 11km, then cut their gun depression and vertical targeting in half. Im sure they wont mind. Oh and their turret rotation by 25%. Im basing this off the t80bvm/90 btw not 10.3 tanks.
The strongest positions on most maps are hills, take Iberian for example
Spoiler
5 degrees of depression works on the south spawn hill, or at least sort of you can contest the guys on the other side from here. If you get north spawn and play the other hill you are cooked and can not contest the south hill without having to crest the entire hill to take a shot. You are forced to go flank early if they are playing there. Which is not ideal if there are targets you can egage from that hill which is a much safer option. On both these hills your biggest threat is a far East flank, having better reverse lets you have a better reaction to these, we are talking it takes extra seconds in a russian tank to move into posistion to deal with that flank so say you spot it the flank late, you die in a russian tank, you live in anything else because you have that extra 2-3 seconds time to reverse into cover from that area.
This plays out on basically every map that isn’t a city map in the game, you get cucked by 5/6 degrees and can’t play on these hills with OP sight lines. And your poor reverse also makes hill peaking more risky even if you had the depression.
Another one is Ardennes east side of the map. South spawn in this red line you can get into a decent position without taking fire and play there, but again playing around those building with poor reverse sucks compared to tanks with good reverse, its hard to reposition or deal with getting pushed, you get stuck a lot of times in russian tanks in bad spots you can’t get out of. North spawn west side is awful for russian tanks theres no good cover to play on your side, its nothing but hills that are nightmares for low gun depression tanks and you just get bullied. This whole map is just a nightmarefor Russia in general.
Spoiler
Gun depression severely limits the spots you can play and how you approach a map. Poor reverse makes playing around cover like buildings a nightmare.
Armor is passive protection, and relies on the enemy taking bad shots, there’s no input from the user besides hiding the lower half of your tank, which means you just pray you don’t lose your breach, which isn’t a big deal playing on a hill because you have instant reversible cover and can repair safely. Being mobile, having depression lets you actively protect yourself via positioning, and is much better than armor in the hands of a good player.
You don’t want to be constantly exposing your turret, you want to sit behind something and observe with 3rd person camera or binos then expose your turret and take a shot. If you are just sitting passively in a hull down position you will lose your breach and your commander, possibly get pushed. And even worse than that you are more likely to get scouted, getting scouted is about the worst thing that can happen to you in this game, its a death sentence if CAS is up, and you cant safely do anything anymore without the entire enemy team staring at you.
These spots that have firing positions for Russian tanks with poor depression are few and far between compared to ones applicable to 9/10 degrees of gun depression. Playing aggressive you want fast reaction times, armor isn’t saving you from a player that can aim, so its usually down to who shoots first and when you have stuff like the 2a7 with 40 degrees of rotation vs your ~30 at 12.0, and significantly worse margins below 12.0. Russia best 10.x tank for turret rotation sits at 20 degrees, 2a4 and abrams are 40 thats not good, and the poor reverse means its extremely hard to get out of sticky situations you find yourself in playing aggressively.
Not if you cant actively aim.over the hill
You are lower down that means smaller hills cause more issues.
You’re going to see a hill while a nato tank can shoot over ut.
Okay 3bm60 is on the lower end of top tier rounds
The atgm you should not use over the dart.
The reload in the t90m is 7.1 seconds, abrams is 5 seconds.
Ive g9t all the challangers and while the mobility is comparable, the t90s are better and so are t80s, cr 2 is one of the worst top tiers as it sits now.
